10 DAYS TO THE GAMMA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • 12 – 19 MAY 2024, VYSOKÉ TATRY - SLOVAKIA
  • SENIOR & YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • MMA & STRIKING MMA DISCIPLINES

[Amsterdam. 30 April 2024] There are just 10 days to go until the first athletes begin checking in for the 2024 GAMMA European Championships in Slovakia. Hosted by the Slovak MMA Association (SOMMA), senior and youth tournaments will take place between 12 and 19 May all under one roof at the Bellevue Grand Hotel in Vysoké Tatry.

Registration is in its late stages for the Global Mixed Martial Arts Association’s first event to use the fenced, MMA Arena, that has become a signature of the professional sport. The MMA Arena will be used for the senior, U18 & U16 competitions, whereas tatami mats will form the fields-of-play for the younger age categories. Medals will be on the line in two disciplines - mixed martial arts (MMA) and striking MMA. Held under Amateur MMA rules suited to the tournament format, the senior competitions are open to all athletes including those with a professional record, which will surely result in an extremely competitive continental championship.

The first youth athletes check-in on 12 May and will undergo the medical examinations and weigh-ins. Senior athletes will have additional randomised hydrated weight testing as part of their pre-competition requirements.

GAMMA’s return to Europe comes fresh off the back of the federation’s first event under the Olympic banner with the African Games in March, for which it achieved inclusion for MMA for the first time.

GAMMA President Alexander Engelhardt commented:

“With the Olympic Games taking place in Paris in a little less than 100 days, the global interest in sporting events, particularly in Europe, is once again reaching its peak and we are extremely happy to be staging our European Championships in the heart of the continent. Many of our athletes dream of one day competing in MMA at the Olympic Games and if we achieve our long-term vision, it is our youth competitors who in future years may be the first MMA athletes to step up onto the international, Olympic podium. Our European Championships go from strength to strength in terms of the competitiveness and popularity and we look forward to welcoming the best athletes of all ages from across Europe, those that may be competing at one of our events for the first time as well as GAMMA medallists and returning athletes from our previous editions. It promises to be a superb event.”
