DVD REVIEW: RING OF HONOR GLORY BY HONOR 5 NIGHT TWO - MISAWA VS. KENTA, DANIELSON VS. MORISHIMA, BRISCOES VS. AGE OF THE FALL & MORE

By Ed Shirreffs on 3/16/2008 12:15 PM

On November 3, 2007, Ring of Honor concluded Glory By Honor VI weekend at the Manhattan Center in New York City. Night One was a top loaded card that ended with an unfortunate, albeit necessary, time limit draw. Night Two should not have that problem.

This DVD opens with a montage of hard hitting spots and classic moments with unforgettable appearances. I must say that I really hate the Real Wrestling for Real Fans slogan.

Match thoughts: Hero-Generico shouldn't have been the opener. I have to chuckle at ROH using the Real Wrestling for Real Fans line, then opening a major DVD with a match featuring a guy who really can wrestle playing the cowardly, cocky heel in a cartoonish WWE-like stable. The first ten to twelve minutes featured a couple arm drags and the usual shenanigans you see on every DVD. As I've said before, I'm sure it's great live, but it's grating to watch. There's got to be a way to edit his matches and make them tighter at the start. The last few minutes were fun, but this is totally miss-able. Very disappointing.

The tag match that followed was better, but fairly standard as far as these things go.

Aries-Hagadorn was obviously a squash.

Nigel's promo was must see. Looking back now, it was a great bit of foreshadowing if the promo was planned. If not, Nigel did a good job of improvising.

Very good match between Claudio and Marufuji, who I love watching. The selling was well done, the moves looked believable, and the match was in doubt until the finish.

The Danielson-Morishima brawl was excellent, but the finish was horrible. I can see the need to keep the feud going, but there are better ways than that to do it.

Black-Payne was another quick squash.

The trios faction match was fantastic. The action didn't let up for one second, and the finish was simply disgusting. Loved it.

Hero was excellent on the mic. Some of his best talking in months.

Less stalling meant Hero looked a lot better in the match with Aries. He follows his best talking in months with his best ROH match in months.

KENTA-Misawa is on the short list of must see matches from 2007. If you regularly follow NOAH, it will mean even more, but if you regularly follow NOAH, you likely have seen this already. Even if you aren't familiar with either man, you should be going out of your way to watch this.

Tag match was as brutal as you'd think a match between these two teams would be. Some of those moves were just nasty. Hard to see how they can top that one, but it will be fun to see.

Overall, the DVD is must buy. I didn't like the Dragon-Morishima finish, but that match has to be seen. The GHC Title match was excellent, and it was followed by a great brawl. Chris Hero redeemed himself with a solid showing against Austin Aries. Almost three hours of action, and very little time spent on backstage interviews or skits.
