FIP CAGE OF PAIN 2 DVD REVIEW

By Richard Trionfo on 6/8/2008 5:50 PM
In December 2006, FIP held their Cage of Pain show that was the culmination of the year long feud between the Heartbreak Express and Black Market. After the brutality of the first Cage of Pain, those two teams earned each other’s respect and teamed to face the YRR. Their feud ended at Cage of Pain 2 in September, 2007. Also on this show, Roderick Strong will defend the FIP World Heavyweight Title against the newest member of DP Associates Larry Sweeney; and in a six man tag match, Dragon Gate wrestlers BxB Hulk and Yamato will team up with Jack Evans to face the masked team of Delirious, Hallowicked, and Jigsaw.

Here are the results from the show.

Match Number Four: FIP Florida Heritage Champion Erick Stevens defeats Necro Butcher of DP Associates with Mr. Milo Beasley and Dave Prazak in a No Disqualification Match
The match starts off outside the ring and quickly goes into the crowd. While Stevens and Necro fight outside the ring, Prazak puts some chairs into the ring for Necro to use later in the match. They fight over by the cage that is going to be used in the Cage of Pain Match and Stevens sends Necro into the cage. Stevens and Necro exchange chops and then Stevens throws a trash can at Necro. Stevens sets Necro in a chair in the crowd and Stevens hits a Yakuza kick on Necro. They return to the ringside area and Necro hits Stevens with a chair and then he puts the chair under Stevens and he slams him. Stevens and Necro continue to battle at ringside and then they return to the ring with Stevens suplexing Necro onto the chairs in the ring. Necro chops Stevens on the top turnbuckle and then he hits a rana onto a pile of chairs in the center of the ring. After the match, Dave Prazak gets on the mic and he says that DP Associates will be back in November and they will be more dangerous than ever.

It was time to set up the Cage of Pain.

Sal Rinauro was the first man to enter the Cage of Pain for the YRR but he got on the mic before entering. Sal says that twenty years ago on July 4, 1987, a young man was flown first class to Atlanta to see the most brutal, death defying and hardcore match. That kid promised that he would never be involved in a match known as War Games. Black Market and the Heartbreak Express made that young man break his promise. They made him turn his back on his morals. Black Market and the Heartbreak Express have put him, Chasyn Rance, Kenny King, and Jason Blade in this situation. They have been wasting their lives for the last six months and have been burdened with bunkhouse brawls and street fights. Every time the YRR was successful. The Heartbreak Express and Black Market have been brought together by hatred. However, those two teams do not hate the YRR, they hate that they cannot be the YRR.

Match Number Seven: The Heartbreak Express of Sean and Phil Davis and Black Market of Joey Machete and Shawn Murphy defeated the YRR of Jason Blade, Sal Rinauro, Kenny King, and Chasyn Rance in Cage of Pain II
The first two men in the match were Sal Rinauro representing the YRR and Joey Machete of Black Market. Rinauro slaps Machete and then he tries to escape the cage but Machete pulls Sal off the cage. Machete takes a chair from the cage and throws it at Rinauro and Rinauro is bleeding. The next person to enter the Cage of Pain is Kenny King of the YRR. The light tubes get used by Machete when he hits King and Rinauro with them. King and Rinauro work over Machete as the next person enters the match and it is Sean Davis of the Heartbreak Express. Sean attacks King and Rinauro with clotheslines and then with a trash can lid. After King hits them with the trash can lid, Machete and Davis are bleeding. Rinauro uses the barbed wire on Sean’s forehead. The next man to enter the Cage of Pain is Jason Blade of the YRR. Blade is welcomed into the match with a light tube. Kenny King is the next person to use the barbed wire on Sean Davis. The next person to enter the match is Phil Davis of the Heartbreak Express. Phil brings a fire extinguisher into the ring and he sprays everyone in the ring with it. Sean Davis hits King with the fire extinguisher. Rinauro gets hit with another light tube by Machete. The final member of the YRR to enter the match is Chasyn Rance. Blade gets a chain and he chokes Sean Davis with it. King hits a drop kick into a chair held in front of Phil’s head. Rinauro goes to the top of the cage and he hits a double sledge on Machete. The final man to enter the match is Shawn Murphy of Black Market and the War Games begins.

All four members of the YRR go after Murphy but Murphy sends all of them into the cage. Phil grabs a piece of a light tube and he uses it on Rinauro. Machete grabs the trash can lid and hits everyone in the YRR with it. King hits Machete with a light tube. The YRR set up Shawn Murphy for a four man spike piledriver on Murphy but Machete breaks it up. All of the members of the YRR try to escape the cage but they are all hit with light tubes. Blade hangs on to the cage and he gets to the top where he battles with Phil Davis. Davis connects with a head butt and Blade falls off the cage and through a table set up on the floor. A table with light tubes on top is set up and Kenny King is sent through that table and King is pinned.

After the match, the Heartbreak Express and Black Market celebrate in the ring, but the lights go out and there are two flashes in the ring. When the lights go back on, the Heartbreak Express are standing over Black Market. The fans show their appreciation for the Heartbreak Express’s actions by showering the ring with bottles and other debris.

Cage of Pain 2 Show Thoughts

Let me start off by saying that all eight men in the Cage of Pain Match deserve a lot of praise for their performances during the match. There are photos circulating online of the match as well as what Sal Rinauro’s back looked like after the match. Parts of the building looked like a war zone with all of the blood and carnage.

The other people who deserve some recognition are the people who set up the cage and weapons for the Cage of Pain Match. It took around fifty minutes to get everything set up, but since there were no time limitations for television, they had time to get things set up the right way.

This might have been one of the best FIP shows from top to bottom in its three year history. This also appeared to be the largest crowd that attended a show in Crystal River for FIP.

The three way match was a good way to get the crowd started and ready for the night of wrestling action that they were going to see.

The promo by Roderick Strong did a good job of setting up the FIP World Heavyweight Title Match later in the show as well as recap what happened the previous night in Brooksville.

The women’s tag match was a very solid wrestling match. I thought the promos before the match were good, especially when Daizee Haze was commenting on Lacey’s ring attire and Lacey corrected Daizee. I hope that comment makes it on the DVD. I also liked that they had Daizee Haze get the victory in this match.

The Gran Akuma/Jay Briscoe match was very good. I have been impressed with Akuma’s work in FIP and he held his own with Briscoe in the match. There were a few times when I expected to see Akuma get the victory, but the loss did not hurt his position in the company.

I really enjoyed the Necro Butcher/Erick Stevens match. I have not seen Erick in this type of match since the 2005 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup when he teamed with Steve Madison against Roderick and Sedrick Strong. Necro Butcher is another new face during the last year who has added a lot to FIP. This match went all over the building.

After four solid matches to start the show, the six man tag match blew everything else away. This might have been the best match in FIP history. I loved the five man triangle choke spot because of Delirious’s decision not to put someone in the triangle choke but to apply a Boston Crab. I think this was Hallowicked’s best match during his time in FIP. Yamato and BxB Hulk were good on Friday night, but this performance on Saturday was so much better than that. They worked so well with Jack Evans. If this was the only match on the DVD, it would be worth the purchase price. My description (or almost anyone else’s description) could not do this match any justice.

The Roderick Strong/Larry Sweeney match was good and I am looking forward to a rematch in the future.

Just as impressive as the six man tag match, Sal Rinauro’s promo at the start of the Cage of Pain Match deserves some mention. It was a great way to get the fans to understand the history of War Games as well as to show that he is not someone known for these type of matches but because of the feud with Black Market and the Heartbreak Express, he is willing to go to that next level. It was an intense promo that did as much to sell the match as the actual carnage in the ring.

If you are a fan of violent matches, then Cage of Pain should be to your liking. This version was a bit more violent than the first one with many more light tubes being used. I liked the War Games style for this match because I think it would have been too crazy if it started off with all eight men in the cage at the beginning. The build to the announcement from Jonathan Gold to Let the War Games Begin was good. There was so much going on during this match, that it was hard to get everything. Jason Blade’s bump through the table from the top of the cage was crazy.

I was a bit surprised that the Heartbreak Express turned on Black Market after the victory. I assume this will resume their feud from 2006. I did not like the way that the crowd reacted by throwing bottles into the ring, but it was an interesting visual. The people of Crystal River love Black Market so it explains why they reacted the way they did.

Cage of Pain 2 DVD Thoughts:

The DVD runs slightly more than 2 ½ hours in length.

With the new ringside lighting, it has enhanced the video quality and allows the viewer to focus on the action in the ring.

They did a great job on commentary of putting over the carnage that we would see in the main event.

Lenny Leonard and Dave Prazak also do a great job throwing in references to old wrestling angles and situations throughout the DVD. Their comments do not take away from the action in the ring and makes Leonard and Prazak one of the best announcing duos. Leonard and Prazak also do a good job of mentioning other shows to tie them into the matches on this show.

The DVD also allows the people who were at the show who might have missed some of the action that goes around the building to be able to see what they missed.

I thought it was a great touch to have the video highlights of the main event, especially seeing different angles of certain spots. It was good to be able to see how the fall from the cage through the table by Jason Blade from the hard camera so you could see how far he fell and where the table was in relation to the ring. The table spot with Kenny going through the table was also interesting to see from the different angles. Then to see how it looked like from inside the ring after the match when the crowd pelted the ring with trash.

While the main event was enough of a reason to get this DVD, I think the six man tag match was excellent. The two title matches were also very good with the brawl between Stevens and Necro; while Strong and Sweeney had a solid wrestling match.
