DVD REVIEW: RING OF HONOR WITHOUT REMORSE

By Ed Shirreffs on 6/23/2008 9:11 AM
New Page 1

On January 26, Ring of Honor held Without Remorse in Chicago Ridge, IL.  As you may guess from the title of the card, No Remorse Corps feature prominently.  No arguments with that here.  Also, Delirious and Adam Pearce are scheduled to have their final match together...we hope.

Roderick Strong opens the DVD talking about what they promise to be a big night for the No Remorse Corps.  Rocky and Davey have a tag title shot and Roddy is facing Nigel McGuinness for the ROH World Title.  NRC are already planning for their after party.  Davey says he found a chick.  Roddy says, "In Ring of Honor?"  Heh.  Indeed, there is a girl, and she's pretty cute.  Roddy tries to sell her on partying with NRC after the show.  Roddy tells Davey he has to watch the gold instead of going to the party.

Delirious is on a scaffold with a dog collar chain cutting what I presume is a promo about what he is doing to Adam Pearce tonight.  It's surprisingly effective.

Austin Aries & Bryan Danielson vs. Erick Stevens & Jay Briscoe

This is a Dream Partner Ultimate Endurance Qualifying match.  The winners go to fight for the tag titles later in the night.  Have there ever been so many main eventers jerking the curtain?

Age of the Fall are in the back.  Jimmy says they are still in control.  They vow to get the tag team titles back.

Match thoughts:

The opener was one of the freshest tag team matches I've seen in awhile.  I love the concept of dream partners like Dragon and Aries along the lines of the Megapowers.  Everyone looked like they were having fun in there, and that adds a lot, too.

I know some people are big Pelle fans, but I'm not one of them.  Hagadorn isn't so hot for me, either, and he's terrible on the mic.  Too many shut ups towards the crowd.

The best part of the intergender match was the promos by Sweeney.  At least they kept it short this time.  Haze can't talk.  I liked the second match more than I thought I would, however.  SHIMMER fans will probably enjoy it a lot more.

I really enjoyed Claudio-Generico.  It was another fresh match, and featured a lot of good psychology.  I actually thought the twenty minute time limit draw was the best finish they could have done.  Show is really looking good up to this point.

Once again, with Mark Briscoe and Joey Matthews, we get a new match, something that's lacking at times with ROH.  I really like Mark and Jay in singles matches as a change of pace, and Mark shows he doesn't need to do anything crazy to have an entertaining match.  Wish he'd do it more often.

How much you enjoy the chain match depends on how much you enjoyed the feud.  It was a decent match, good enough for a blowaway, but it was plodding in the middle.  Good finish, though.

Ultimate Endurance lived up to the lofty expectations that would be set by such world class tag teams being in the match.  The booking was great and there were a ton of mark out moments, not limited to the simultaneous submissions, which I liked most of all.  I also liked that AOTF was eliminated first, to get the idea of them retaining out of the way.  Danielson and Aries lose nothing since they basically fought four matches in one night, while NRC sat out most of the I Quit match.

The main event was predictably good with those two in the match.  It was stiff and hard hitting, which was befitting of the feud they were having.  My one complaint was a few too many lariats, but that's always going to happen in Nigel's matches.

Overall, this is a great DVD to own.  I highly recommend buying it.  There is some filler early on, but it's a pretty loaded show, and there were a lot of fresh matches.  It reminded me of an unscripted event, but this actually felt random.  I was actually surprised how much I liked this since it didn't look to be a top of the line show.  Joey Matthews in particular had a good weekend.  I couldn't really pick a MOTN because I liked everything for different reasons.  There's something for everyone on this DVD.
