A new beginning! That's the phrase that was going around the locker room area at The Green Room in Dundalk this past Saturday during Maryland Championship Wrestling's 10th Annual Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup. The capacity crowd saw every MCW championship change hands, as well as numerous surprises.
The first surprise of the night was that the MCW Heavyweight Championship match would start the event. Number-one contender Ryan McBride would defeat the defending champion Patrick Brink in a match that many are claiming to be the Match of the Year. McBride would overcome the interference of Brink's stablemates Adam Cole & Tyler Hilton. Their interference would be stopped by Cobian and former ECW World Heavyweight Champion Tommy Dreamer. McBride would hit the 450 splash, and pinned Brink to claim his first MCW Heavyweight Championship. "That was the loudest pop (ovation) that I've ever heard," said McBride. "This is the greatest moment of my career. And I will never forget this. But this is only the beginning. I'm promise to represent MCW and its' fans well as the MCW Heavyweight Champion!"
Other surprises that occurred throughout the evening included the MCW returns of ring announcer Larry Kennedy Phillips, former Tag Team Champion and former partner of Ryan McBride, Teddy Stigma, and former MCW Heavyweight Champion Christian York. York would take the place of Jose Maximo, whose retirement forced him out of the Shamrock Cup. York won the qualifying match, defeating The Best Around. York would then go on and survive the six-man elimination finale over McBride, Tommaso Ciampa, Sami Callihan, Teddy Stigma, and Rich Swann. With the win, York became the first man to win the Shamrock Cup three times, winning Cup I in 1999 and Cup V in 2003.
Two other titles changed hands, as The Holy Rollers won the MCW Tag Team Championship in a fatal four way match over defending champs Team MackTion, The Hit Squad, & CA Elliott & Nui Tofiga. Elliott's attack on his partner led to Tofiga being pinned by The Rollers.
Cobian would win his first MCW Championship, taking the Rage Title away from Adam Cole in the Extreme Rules Tag Team Match. Adam Cole & Tyler Hilton would issue a challenge to Cobian & Tommy Dreamer, stating that if they won the match, they would be on the August 8th TNA Hardcore Justice PPV. Dreamer accepted, and demanded that if the PPV shot was on the line, then Cole would have to put up his Rage Championship. Cole agreed. That decision proved to be a mistake as Cobian made Cole submit, as Cole was trapped in Cobian's backbreaker.
Former WWE Women's and Diva's Champion Mickie James would make a trimuphant return, defeating Mia Yim. And the Battle of the Blogs saw Baltimore Sun Wrestling Columnist Kevin Eck, Cole Calloway, and Ronnie Zukko defeat Baltimore Sun Sports Columnist Peter Schmuck and Fed-Up.
Maryland Championship Wrestling's upcoming events includes shows on September 10th, October 9th, and October 30th.
