RING OF HONOR NEWSWIRE

By Mike Johnson on 1/19/2011 10:07 AM

- ROH World Champion Roderick Strong successfully retained the ROH World Title in his third defense against Jay Briscoe on Saturday night in Charlotte, NC. The Championship bout was the windup to a stellar card Saturday night and was another epic defense for Strong. Going into the match Jay made it known that he did not like Strong’s new attitude and told Roderick that he didn’t need Truth by his side. As a result of this Strong told Truth to stay home so he could fight Jay one-on-one, and prove he doesn’t need Martini by his side 24/7 just to keep the belt. In Charlotte, Strong proved just that as he busted Jay open very badly during the contest and survived a one-on-one war with title intact. Each man’s respect for one another possibly returned as both warriors shook hands afterwards like stand-up individuals. This match is worth going out of your way to see and shows that one day it is very possible that Jay Briscoe could hold the most prestigious title in pro wrestling.

- El Generico is next in line to challenge for the ROH World championship in Los Angeles, California on 1/28. It is now official that Generico will challenge Strong for the World Championship in Roderick’s 4th title defense. Generico earned this ROH World Title shot as a result of the pure blood, sweat, and desire to survive that he showed throughout 2010. Generico has showed that he has the heart and spirit to be a champion and he’s got his first opportunity at the Championship in 2 years when ROH hits the West Coast. Tickets for ROH’s return to LA are available here: http://www.rohstore.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=213, and for more information on “WrestleReunion 5” check here: www.wrestlereunion.com.

- In other Los Angeles news (http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/tv-title-match-set-for-los-angeles/), it was announced earlier today that ROH World TV Champion Christopher Daniels will defend his title against ½ of arguably the greatest tag team in ROH history, Mark Briscoe! Mark picked up the victory for his team in the “Champions vs. All-Stars” bout on Friday night when he pinned Daniels, and as seen in the video, “The Fallen Angel” aims to be an honorable champion by defending the belt against another of ROH’s founding fathers.

- There will be a special Meet & Greet autograph session with ROH World Champion Roderick Strong and Jay & Mark Briscoe prior to the event in Los Angeles next Friday night from 7-8 PM. Come out and meet the champ along with one of the best tag teams in the world.

- And in one more “WrestleReunion 5” tidbit, ROH officials are excited to announce that The Cutler Brothers, Brandon and Dustin, have officially signed to debut at ROH’s return to Los Angeles, California on 1/28 at “Wrestlereunion 5”. The Cutler Brothers, standing at 6’3 each and a slim combined weight of 423 lbs, are an impressive west coast tag team that have been making waves on the independent scene recently. The older of the two, Dustin, says “ROH is the place to be. Brandon and I are excited to step into an ROH ring and show our talent to their amazing fans”. Brandon added, “We are PUMPED for the opportunity and hope to impress everyone involved.”

- Speaking of brothers, ROH’s own Bravado Brothers had an interesting weekend. On Friday in Richmond, VA both brothers fell in defeat to Andy Ridge and Grizzly Redwood. The next night in Charlotte, the hometown brothers did whatever they could to not suffer the same fate in their hometown and they defeated Cole and O’Reilly. “I couldn’t believe when my brother got pinned by Ridge,” stated Harlem Bravado, “He couldn’t even beat Homicide or anybody in that Trial Series. There was no way my brother and I would have the same thing happen in front of all our hometown fans.” The loss on Friday seemed to fuel the Bravados to cheat on Saturday as it was clear the finish was assisted by a hand full of tights. The Bravados behavior on Saturday definitely contradicts the things they claim to stand for and we will see what happens this weekend as the Bravado’s have sign to appear this Friday on 1/21 in Philadelphia, PA for our last set of “ROH on HDNet” TV Tapings. Tickets for THIS Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia can be purchased here: http://www.rohstore.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=212.

- “The Notorious 187” Homicide has made it well known that his number one goal since returning to Ring of Honor is to regain the ROH World Championship. At ROH’s “9th Anniversary Show” on 2/26 in Chicago Ridge, IL, Homicide will challenge for the ROH World Title against whoever holds the belt come the iPPV. Homicide knows full well that it could be El Generico that he faces in Chicago Ridge. After Generico was victorious in the 4 Corner Survival on Saturday in Charlotte, Homicide laid Generico out with a devastating Cop Killah. Generico needed to be helped to the back and Homicide let ROH cameras know that whether it is Generico or Strong he will do what it takes to gain the advantage going into his World Championship bout.

- As expected Davey Richards seemed to be 100% going into Richmond, VA and Charlotte, NC over the weekend. Doctors diagnosed Richards with a Grade 2 concussion, however they gave him clearance to wrestle on 1/14 and 1/15. Richards took a heavy beating by Chris Hero on Saturday in an unbelievable contest that proved Richards to be one of the most resilient competitors in ROH. Richards went 2-0 over the weekend and seems to be more motivated then ever. “I took a lot of vicious blows over the weekend,” stated Richards, “It does not matter what I get hit with because in 2011 it is going to take an army to keep me down.” We will have more comments from Richards next week in the ROH Video Wire.

- “The King of Old School” Steve Corino shocked the ROH faithful this weekend with his declaration that he aims to changes his ways (http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/steve-corino-a-changed-man/). The man who helped Kevin Steen down his path of self-destruction is now looking to make amends for his past by helping the youth in the locker room avoid those pitfalls. Can Corino be trusted? Is this yet another mind game for the multi-time World Champion? Only time will tell…

- Pro Wrestling NOAH’s “First Navigation 2011” is underway and competing as part of this tour is none other than former ROH World TV Champion Eddie Edwards. The American Wolf has gone to a draw with Kotaro Suzuki & Yoshinari Ogawa, defeated Kentaro Shiga, and on 1/17 beat Genba Hirayanagi. Edwards is looking at an opportunity to capture the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title on 1/29 when he faces Champion Kotaro Suzuki in Korakuen Hall. Will the Wolf return to the States with a GHC title around his waist as he pursues his rematch for the ROH World TV belt?

- Are you a pro wrestler wanting the very limited opportunity to compete with the best in ROH? If so then it would be wise to sign up for the Ring of Honor training seminar and tryout camp THIS Sunday, January 23rd, 2011, from 10AM to 7PM. The camp will take place at ROH’s headquarters and training center in suburban Philadelphia. The seminar is once again being spearheaded by ROH on HDNet Executive Producer Jim Cornette. Our previous seminars that we have held have each been a huge reason in the signing of Mike Bennett and recent use in the House of Truth of Michael Elgin. This is not just an audition where you pay money and get nothing in return. Everyone, both ROH and the attendees, will learn something.
