STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 16 TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 6/21/2011 4:17 PM
When there are three big MMA events in a single weekend from the UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator Fighting Championships, an impact must be made. Strikeforce gets to fire the first shot this coming weekend as they present Strikeforce Challengers 16. There are plenty of talented fighters on the card like the son of an MMA legend, two talented female competitors and a talented heavyweight prospect.

Kicking off the evening is a women’s middleweight encounter as Julia “The Jewel” Budd (1-1-0) does battle with Germaine “The Iron Lady” De Randamie (2-1-0). Julia Budd has fought all of her professional MMA fights thus far in Strikeforce, with her lone MMA victory coming over Shana Olsen. Germaine De Randamie is currently undefeated in Strikeforce competition, having defeated Stephanie Webber at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg. This fight is to see who becomes relevant for Cristiane Santos to face in the future and that person will be Julia Budd.

A pair of welterweights will be doing battle next as Jason “The Kansas City Bandit” High (13-3-0) faces Quinn Mulhern (15-1-0). Jason High enters the fight riding a four fight winning streak, which includes a victory over MMA legend Hayato Sakurai. Quinn Mulhern spent the majority of his career in the King Of The Cage promotion, where he holds a victory over UFC veteran Rich Clementi. This fight could fast track a fighter to the bigger Strikeforce events very fast, but it will be Jason High achieving victory.

Up next is a battle of top light heavyweight prospects as Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (10-0-0) faces off with Gian Villante (7-2-0). Lorenz Larkin is currently undefeated in Strikeforce competition, having defeated Scott Lighty at Strikeforce Challengers 15. Gian Villante made his Strikeforce debut at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva, losing to Chad Griggs in a grand prix reserve bout. This fight should turn out to be a big slugfest, but it will be Lorenz Larkin remaining undefeated at the end.

Our co-main event is a lightweight division affair as Ryan Couture (2-0-0) will go into battle against Matt Ricehouse (4-0-0). Ryan Couture has fought both of his professional MMA fights in Strikeforce, defeating Lee Higgins and Lucas Stark. Matt Ricehouse is currently undefeated in Strikeforce competition, having defeated Tom Aaron at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu II. This fight is a striker versus grappler encounter, but I am going with Ryan Couture to remain undefeated in this one.

Headlining this card is a clash in the welterweight division as Caros “The Future” Fodor (8-2-0) takes on James Terry (10-2-0). Caros Fodor is currently undefeated in Strikeforce competition, with his biggest victory coming over David Douglas. James Terry has won five of six while in Strikeforce, including an exciting two fight series with Zak Bucia. This fight could determine who graduates next to bigger Strikeforce events and I’m going with Caros Fodor to do so.
