UFC ON VERSUS IV TELEVISED CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 6/25/2011 10:35 AM
The end of a three day weekend filled with great MMA events will conclude with a huge welterweight fight pitting Nate Marquardt against Rick Story. That is not all that is on the card as there are two intriguing battles in the UFC Heavyweight Division. Plus, two fighters are essentially fighting for their jobs as another pair of welterweights will clash on the card.

Kicking off the action is a heavyweight encounter as Matt “Meathead” Mitrione (4-0-0) faces Christian Morecraft (7-1-0). Matt Mitrione is an undefeated fighter making waves in the UFC, with notable victories over Kimbo Slice and Joey Beltran. Christian Morecraft is coming off of the biggest win in his short UFC run, defeating Sean McCorkle at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 24. Matt Mitrione is an evolving fighter and he will have a solid game plan on route to defeating Christian Morecraft.

A pair of welterweights will be fighting to avoid the pink slip next as Matt “The Immortal” Brown (11-10-0) takes on John “Doomsday” Howard (14-6-0). Matt Brown has lost three straight fights in the UFC, with notable defeats coming to Ricardo Almeida and Chris Lytle. John Howard enters this fight riding a two fight losing streak, most recently losing to Thiago Alves at UFC 124. These fighters are fighting to protect their UFC careers, but it will be John Howard sending Matt Brown to the unemployment line.

Another set of heavyweights are squaring off next as Pat “HD” Barry (6-2-0) is set to battle Cheick Kongo (15-6-2). Pat Barry has won three of five in the UFC, most recently defeating Joey Beltran at UFC Fights For The Troops II. Cheick Kongo is looking to redeem himself after a sad showing against Travis Browne at UFC 120, as the fight was mauled by Cheick Kongo low blows. This fight is going to come down to who can dictate their style better, which Cheick Kongo will do on route to a victory.

Headlining this card is a huge welterweight contender’s battle as Nate “The Great” Marquardt (31-10-2) faces off with Rick “Horror” Story (13-3-0). Nate Marquardt is fighting for the first time as a welterweight here after spending the majority of his career at middleweight. Rick Story enters this fight riding a six fight winning streak, most recently defeating Thiago Alves at UFC 130. This fight will be about how Nate Marquardt handles the weight cut, but I see Rick Story outwrestling his opponent on route to victory.
