FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC 132: CRUZ VS. FABER II

By David Tees on 7/4/2011 8:13 PM
After the shocking events that ended the UFC On Versus IV broadcast a week ago, the UFC clearly carried that momentum to UFC 132. The event featured several fighters moving up the rankings and one light heavyweight who saved his livelihood. More importantly, the main event of the whole show was easily one of the best championship fights in a very long time.

Round One: Give Them Five More Rounds

Dominick Cruz had one mind set heading into his UFC Bantamweight Title defense against Urijah Faber, to get revenge. That mindset was achieved on Saturday Night when Dominick Cruz won a five round unanimous decision victory over his rival. This fight was as close as can be and it impressed UFC President Dana White so much that he awarded both fighters a “Fight Of The Night” bonus. With very few contenders set up for Dominick Cruz to face, a rubber match with Urijah Faber may be in the books.

Next Round For Dominick Cruz: A rubber match with Urijah Faber or Demetrious Johnson

Next Round For Urijah Faber: A rubber match with Dominick Cruz or Miguel Torres

Round Two: The Axe Murderer Was Murdered

It took sixteen long months for Wanderlei Silva to return to MMA competition and it took Chris Leben only twenty seven seconds to finish him. Chris Leben got to finally fight his idol and UFC 132 may have been the last time that Wanderlei Silva has competed in the UFC. In a thinning pool of contenders in the UFC Middleweight Division, Chris Leben may have made himself a contender again. If it was the last time that Wanderlei Silva has competed in professional MMA, then one must admire the career he had.

Next Round For Chris Leben: Mark Munoz, Jorge Santiago or Damian Maia

Next Round For Wanderlei Silva: Retirement from MMA competition

Round Three: A Job Saved

It has been nearly five years since Tito Ortiz last won a fight in the UFC, that all came to a very fast end this past Saturday Night. After dropping Ryan Bader with an uppercut, Tito Ortiz locked in a tight guillotine choke and a tap out followed. This was a career saving fight for Tito Ortiz, who was told before a fight that his career in the UFC would be over with a loss. This loss may be crippling for Ryan Bader, who has now dropped two fights in a row to Tito Ortiz and Jon Jones.

Next Round For Tito Ortiz: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira/Rich Franklin winner or a rubber match with Forrest Griffin

Next Round For Ryan Bader: Kyle Kingsbury or Steve Cantwell

Round Four: Right Behind Nick Diaz Is…

Carlos Condit, who ended the thirteen fight undefeated streak of Dong Hyun Kim with a highlight reel knee strike at UFC 132. Carlos Condit battled a serious illness heading into the fight and was still able to put off the biggest win thus far in his career. Carlos Condit can now sit back for a while and wait for the upcoming Georges St. Pierre/Nick Diaz title fight to see who he will be facing in a title fight. Do not count out Dong Hyun Kim just yet, who is still only a few fights away from a potential title fight of his own.

Next Round For Carlos Condit: The winner of Georges St. Pierre/Nick Diaz title fight

Next Round For Dong Hyun Kim: Dan Hardy, Chris Lytle or Dennis Hallman

Round Five: The Lightweight Division Becomes More Stacked

Rafael Dos Anjos made himself an instant contender in the lightweight division when he laid out George Sotiropoulos with a lone right hand. Melvin Guillard followed that up in the next fight when he destroyed Shane Roller with hammer fists in the first round. Dennis Siver followed up those two lightweight victories with a controversial decision win over Matt Wiman. These are three huge victories in a division that is becoming more stacked with contenders as each minute passes on the clock.

Next Round For Rafael Dos Anjos: Matt Wiman, Cole Miller or Sam Stout

Next Round For Melvin Guillard: Dennis Siver, Joe Lauzon or Spencer Fisher

Next Round For Dennis Siver: Melvin Guillard, Joe Lauzon or Donald Cerrone
