STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 18 TELEVISION CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 8/9/2011 1:37 PM
The last few editions of the Strikeforce Challengers Series have been nothing short of stellar and this upcoming edition should be no different. The main event is an important lightweight division fight that features a former UFC Ultimate Fighter contestant. Also, the fast rising MMA veteran Danillo Villefort and a potential contender in the lightweight division compete.

The evening will kick off with a light heavyweight division fight as Roy Jones Jr. (6-1-0) stands across the cage from Derrick “Caveman” Mehmen (11-3-0). Roy Jones Jr. has fought seven times thus far in his professional MMA career, with all of those fights coming in the Iowa Challenge promotion. Derrick Mehmen has won three of his last four fights and has competed once in the Bellator Fighting Championships. This fight should be nothing short of a slugfest, but it will be Derrick Mehmen picking up the big victory here.

Up next is a women’s bantamweight division fight as Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio (4-1-0) squares off with “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (2-0-0). This fight will mark Sarah D’Alelio’s first MMA fight of 2011 and she is coming off of a loss to top rated Julie Kedzie. Ronda Rousey made her professional MMA debut earlier this year and has finished both of her opponents in fewer than two minutes total. This fight could determine who gets in the top five of this very shallow division, which Ronda Rousey will do.

A pair of lightweights will step into the cage next as Pat “Bam Bam” Healy (24-16-0) goes into battle against Eric “Little Lee” Wisely (17-5-0). Pat Healy is coming off of the biggest win thus far in his MMA career, which was a victory over Lyle Beerbohm at Strikeforce Challengers 14. Eric Wisely enters the fight riding a four fight winning streak, including a victory over UFC veteran Hermes Franca. This fight should determine who moves up to the bigger events and that mover will be veteran Pat Healy.

The co-main event will be a middleweight division affair as Nate James (12-7-1) takes on Danillo “Indio” Villefort (13-3-0). Nate James has won three of his last four fights and he recently competed in the Bellator Fighting Championships. Danillo Villefort makes his Strikeforce debut riding a four fight winning streak, which includes victories over Matt Horwich and Joey Villasenor. This fight will be a lot more competitive than most people think, but Danillo Villefort still earns the victory.

The main event will be taking place in the lightweight division as Jorge “JG” Gurgel (14-7-0) faces Joe Duarte (9-2-0). Jorge Gurgel has won only two of four in the Strikeforce promotion, but he is coming off of a victory over Billy Vaughan. Joe Duarte is currently undefeated in Strikeforce competition, having defeated Saad Awad at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley. This fight is primed for a major upset, which is exactly what Joe Duarte will be pulling this coming Saturday Night.
