[RESULTS] MCW DUNDALK, 12/30/11, HOLIDAY HELL

From Jeff Amdur, MCW historian

All major Maryland Championship Wrestling titles changed hands as the resolution of one mystery led to even greater complications and intrigue at MCW’s Holiday Hell card held at the New Green Room in Dundalk, MD, on December 30, 2011, a card that also marked the return to MCW of several former major stars.

Estimated attendance:  400-450.  MCW Co-owner: DAN McDEVITT.  Executive Producer:  PETE McDEVITT.  Ring announcer: AL ALBERT.  Doing play-by-play for the upcoming DVD:  MARK BRAY.  Ringside assistant:  MIKE BOWMAN. Timekeeper at the bell:  JEFF AMDUR. Taping the proceedings: PAUL McCLEMENS and AARON SAIA.  Sound courtesy of PUMPKINHEAD SOUND. Referees for the evening:  TONYA STEVENS, DINO ROMERO and JARED ARTMAN.  Photographing the proceedings: TIM WALKER (Yes, that Tim Walker, not the rookie wrestler) and GREG GREENLAND.

The evening begins with the MCW HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS, which had been postponed from the October 30 “Night of the Legends” card because of the freak snowstorm.  JUDGE JEFF JONES, working in the offices of now-Baltimore-based Ring of Honor promotion, tosses ROH t-shirts and DVDs to the fans before emceeing the inductions, assisted by MCW commissioner JIMMY CICERO.  This year’s HOF inductees:

  1. “HARD ROCK” RICKY BLUES, a local and regional wrestling mainstay for over a quarter-century.
  2. EARL THE PEARL & RAMBLIN’ RICH MYERS (THE HOLY ROLLERS), the recently retired tag team that had been created in the beginning days of MCW.  Earl and Rich are now training possible successors at GILLBERG’S WRESTLING ACADEMY.
  3. TOM BRANDI, a.k.a. JOHNNY GUNN and SALVATORE SINCERE, a major contributor to the success MCW and other regional independent promotions have had for over 25 years.  I recall seeing “Bam Bam Brandi” in the mid- to late 1980’s at the first indie card I ever attended, when he wrestled The Samoan Savage (later Fatu and even later Rikishi) at the Towson Center.
  4. BILL APTER, who as editor of Pro Wrestling Illustrated, The Wrestler, Inside Wrestling and other magazines (dubbed the “Apter mags” in his honor), was THE source for national news about the then only-regional wrestling promotions and stars in those long-ago, pre-Internet days.  Adapting to the technology, Bill now continues to dole out the information at www.1wrestling.com.
  5. DAN McDEVITT, owner and co-founder of MCW, whose vision and perseverance have led to the continued success of the most-thriving independent Maryland promotion of all time.

Match #1:  THE BOOKIES (NICO & CHICO) pinned COUNTRY STRONG (HOSS HAGOOD & KEVIN CHESNEY, with CHASTITY) in 5:33.  I’m still not sure who is Nico and who is Chico, so I’ll say the taller one is Nico and the thicker one is Chico.  Hoss and Nico start out, and after a headlock, Hoss hits several arm flips that eventually send the Bookie out of the ring.  Chico is also thrown out.  Kevin tags in and does a 180º over the top rope onto Chico on the floor.  Sprawled out on the floor, Chico is obviously injured and is no longer a factor in the match.  Now in what has unfortunately become a handicap match, Nico picks up the pace, chopping and stomping on Chesney.  Kevin recovers to get several near-falls on Nico after a series of suplexes.  Hagood tags in and is eventually rolled up by Nico for the pin.

Match #2:  “THE ITALIAN JOB” NICK SARACHELLI pinned COLE CALLAWAY in 3:44.  After Cole flips Nick to the ground several times, he embarrasses Nick by suggestively posing to the fans.  Nick has had enough after Cole kisses his hand; he attacks Callaway from behind, whips him into a corner, and bulldogs him.  Cole counters with a sidewalk slam and gets a 2-count.  Nick has a counter of his own, scoring the fall after a suplex and a roll.

Match #3:  THE WINNERS CIRCLE (PAUL WHITE & MITCH MILLER & “BLUE HAZE” R.K. BLUES, with DOC DANIELS & AIDA MARIE) pin BOB STARR & RICKY BLUES & CAT BURGLAR in 8:29.  Father and son square off in the beginning, with RK bringing Dad to the ground with a headlock.  Ricky avoids his son’s somersault flip.  Ricky delivers some chops, then RK some kicks.  Ricky tries to follow up an elbow smash with a leg drop but misses.  As RK heads outside the ring to Doc for some advice, the manager gives some “man-up” advice.  Back in the ring, Ricky throws RK back out and beats on him.  Bob tags in; but there is another major distraction brewing outside.  FREDDIE ORKIN, resplendently dressed in his exterminator regalia, distracts CAT BURGLAR.  The two argue and disappear backstage.  Back in the ring, the Blueses are again at it.  RK hits a suplex slam.  Ricky counters with a slap.  Miller tags in and is promptly kicked out.  He then tags to White, who hits a suplex before getting slammed by Ricky.  RK then tags back in and pins his father after an atomic drop.

Match #4:  BUCK CHYLD pins CHUCK LENNOX in 3:32.  Chuck sends Buck to the corner with a flurry of punches.  Buck gets a college-style takedown and slams Chuck to the mat again after the Black Wall Street guy attempts to get up.  Chuck then pushes the ref into Buck (I guess the ref deems this unintentional, since there is no dq.), who falls to the floor.  Lennox gets a 2-count after a suplex.  Chyld, after getting several near falls, misses a top rope leap.  The crowd, thinking they are at a Ravens game, cheers Buck on by singing the “Seven Nation Army” chorus.  Doing what we hope Joe Flacco will do during the playoffs, Buck picks up steam and gets the 3-count after a bulldog.

Match #5:  “THE SCOTTISH NIGHTMARE” CHRIS CLOW (with DOC DANIELS, AIDA MARIE, MITCH MILLER, PAUL WHITE & R.K. BLUES) won the MCW Television Championship by pinning OLIVER GRIMSLEY (with HOKUS) in 8:09.  Chris comes out waving his giant Scottish flag, prompting deafening “USA” chants from the fans.  Oliver starts strong, delivering a drop kick, and then tripping Clow.  With Chris now draped over the middle rope, Grimsley hits what Darque Karnival fans would call, I guess, a “sizzix-wozzone-nizzine”.  The action goes outside the ring, as Clow retaliates by slamming Grimsley on the side of the ring.  Throwing his opponent back in the ring, Chris gets a 2-count and then another one after a running kick.  Grimsley refuses to submit to a chin lock and powers out.  Clow hits a spine buster, and then turns to the crowd to mock those ever-present “USA” cheers.  As he scores another near fall, Clow, along with his manager, start complaining to the referee about slow counts.  As the manager and referee argue, Grimsley delivers a thrust slam.  The newly formed “Gemini” team of White and Miller work to keep Hokus a non-factor during the whole match. With the ref still distracted, Clow grabs a chair and puts it on the mat, falling down as if he has been hit by it.  Grimsley sees what happens and he himself feigns unconsciousness by falling on the mat.  The ref finally turns around to make several 2-counts for both wrestlers.  Oliver hits a bulldog for another near fall.  Clow eventually hits a neck breaker and wins the title with a 3-count.

During the intermission, former WWE diva MARYSE appears in a corner of the arena for autograph and picture opportunities.

The second half starts with a special live “Apter’s Alley” segment.  His first guests are DOC DANIELS, AIDA MARIE and the entire WINNERS CIRCLE “THE SCOTTISH NIGHTMARE” CHRIS CLOW, GEMINI (MITCH MILLER & PAUL WHITE) & “THE BLUE HAZE” R.K. BLUES).  I’d like to report to you what was said; but the venom of the crowd toward Doc and his stable was so loud that I couldn’t make out one single word.  It was as if Bill was interviewing the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bill’s second guests are RANDY HILL, a former MEWF standout who wrestled under the name of STEVE CAMRY, and RYAN MACKIN, a former Maryland state high school wrestling champion and all-American (Hammond High ’01) who is now a mixed martial arts fighter.  They discuss the future of MMA and several MMA bouts that are coming to the area.  As Ryan mentions that he has never been inside a professional wrestling ring before, MUSTAFA AZIZ DANIELS and BORIS DRAGOFF interrupt the interview.  The Russian, wanting to see how tough the MMAer really is, challenges Mackin to a match at the next MCW card to be held at the Green Room of Saturday, February 25.  Ryan accepts, with Randy promising to train him how to wrestle professional-style.

Match #6:  RICKY REYES won his three-way match against SAMI CALLIHAN and TEDDY STIGMA by scoring the pin fall in 11:08.  I’ll do my best here in describing the incredibly fast proceedings.  Sami hits Teddy (returning to MCW after a long absence) and then is kicked out of the ring by Ricky.  Sami returns and is thrown out of the ring by Teddy.  Sami then misses a top rope leap directed toward Ricky.  Ricky and Teddy throw Sami into the corner.  Teddy and Sami exchange elbows and chops.  Teddy hits a reverse power bomb on Sami, then turns to taunt the crowd.  This enables Ricky to throw Teddy out and then get a 1-count on Sami after hitting a neck breaker.  Got all that so far?  Reyes has Callihan in a body scissors and chokes him.  Stigma starts punching Reyes and moves him to a corner before kicking him out of the ring.  Teddy then throws Sami into several corners before getting a 2-count.  Teddy misses a charge and gets chopped by Sami and splashed by Ricky.  Sami chops Ricky and simultaneously drop kicks both cornered opponents.  Callihan covers Reyes after a neck breaker and body slam; but Stigma kicks him off.  Stigma gets a 2-count on Sami but misses a follow-up charge.  Ricky and Sami trade punches.  Reyes clotheslines Sami and gets a 2-count.  Sami then gets a 2-count.  Ricky attempts another pin but that is broken up by Stigma.  Teddy hits Ricky with a thrust slam but his pin attempt is broken up by Callihan, who then puts Teddy into a half-Boston Crab.  Ricky breaks it up.  After some exchanges, Ricky and Teddy wind up simultaneously kicking each other in the face.  Both wrestlers stagger; but it is Ricky who gets the pin after staggering on to Teddy.  Wow!

Before the next match, which is supposed to be a tag team match between ADAM FLASH/TOM BRANDI and NUI TOFIGA/NAPALM BOMB, Adam announces to the crowd that this is the night where the mysterious “bounty” will finally be collected.  Brandi announces that he has a “Christmas present” for MCW owner DAN McDEVITT and commissioner JIMMY CICERO.  He hands a gift-wrapped 24”x18” something to Al Albert and me at the ringside table and warns us not to open it.  Is Tom Brandi the mastermind behind these bounties?

Napalm Bomb comes out, accompanied by Nui Tofiga, who is on crutches.  With Nui unable to compete due to a bum ankle, Al Albert is ready to announce a Flash/Brandi win by forfeit.  Napalm protests.  The referee, at Flash’s and Brandi’s insistence, sends the hobbled Samoan back to the locker room.  The Bomb tells everyone that he can work this match with another partner, “each and every one of the fans who have supported [him]”.  So here we go with a handicap match as Al and I try to figure out what is under that wrapping.

Match #7:  NAPALM BOMB won his handicap match against TOM BRANDI & ADAM FLASH as a result of a disqualification.  Predictably, the Bomb is double teamed from the outset.  He retaliates with a double clothesline and punches Brandi into a corner.  Adam charges and kicks Napalm.  Napalm avoids being clotheslined and watches Flash and Brandi clothesline each other.  They recover quickly—Flash distracts the referee as Tom puts his shoe to Napalm’s neck.  Adam follows this with a sit-in on the now-cornered Bomb.  Flash’s super kick misses Napalm but hits his partner.  As the resurgent Napalm works over Flash, the mysterious MASKED BOUNTY HUNGER attacks the Bomb.  The referee calls for the bell.  NUI TOFIGA limps to ringside, swinging his crutch at the Bad Guys who retreat to the back.

Match #8:  BLACK WALL STREET (MARCUS STREETS & DROLIX, with CHUCK LENNOX) won the MCW Tag Team Championship with a pin of FED UP (C-FED & G-FED) in 6:53.  Fed Up starts out strong, sending Wall Street out of the ring and eventually into each other.  G-Fed gets several near falls after slamming Drolix.  C and G do the slice-and-dice, and then C gets a 2-count.  He gets another 2-count after a leg drop; but Drolix recovers to hit a drop kick.  Marcus tags in, kicks C and rolls him up for a near fall.  Streets chops C and pushes G, who is on the ring apron.  As the referee keeps G from entering the ring, C is double teamed in the corner.  Streets gets another 2-count after a knee drop.  Drolix tags in, gets his own near fall, and then works over C-Fed.  C, encouraged by the “Son! Son!” chants of the fans, gets a second wind.  He hits a whirling body slam and gets a 2-count.  Outside the ring, Marcus grabs a championship belt from the ringside table.  G-Fed and Drolix battle outside the ring as the ref tries to break them up.  Meanwhile, C-Fed rolls up Streets inside the ring for what could be a pin.  The referee, however, is not there to count it.  Lennox (who has just arrived on the scene) comes in and plunks C-Fed with the title belt and helps Streets roll him up.  The referee, finally returning to the ring, makes the 3-count.

After the match, the victorious Black Wall street folks celebrate in the middle of the ring.  Drolix proclaims them the best tag team ever to come out of  “the Hood”.  Hearing these words, the original MCW tag team from “the Hood”, THE GHETTO MAFIA (QENAAN CREED & 2-DOPE) come to the ring and stake their claim to “best from the Hood” status.  The two teams brawl around the ring.

Before the main event, AL ALBERT again reminds the fans that after the match, ADAM FLASH and TOM BRANDI are going to give DAN McDEVITT and JIMMY CICERO that Christmas present “that will change MCW forever”.

Match #9:  TYLER HILTON won the MCW Heavyweight Championship with a pin fall victory in his 3-way match against COBIAN and champion RONNIE ZUKKO (with JESSIE KAYE).  Hilton and Cobian whip Zukko into a corner and out of the ring.  Cobian puts a wristlock on Tyler.  Tyler avoids a Cobian charge and covers him for a 2-count.  Cobian clotheslines Tyler and gets his own 2-count.  The two then clothesline each other as Ronnie re-enters and gets 2-counts on each opponent.  Ronnie stomps both opponents, throws Cobian out of the ring and getting a 2-count on Hilton.  Ronnie gets another near fall on Hilton after a backdrop.  He then choke slams Hilton; but his try for the pin is broken up by Cobian.  Cobian is all over the champ, with ax handles, choke slams and a knee drop.  He covers Ronnie but is pushed off by Hilton.  Hilton slings Ronnie forward and pushes Cobian into the ropes.  Tyler hits an upside down knee drop on Cobian.  Meanwhile, CANDIE, who has dedicated her life to tormenting the man who had mistreated her, distracts Ronnie.  This allows another returning MCW stalwart, CHRISTIAN YORK, to beat the living [fecal matter] out of Zukko.  York leaves Zukko helpless in the ring.  Hilton falls on Ronnie for the pin and the championship.

That’s not all, folks.  Not by a long shot.

As Hilton celebrates his victory, TOM BRANDI, ADAM FLASH, and two MASKED BOUNTY HUNTERS attack Hilton and Cobian. Brandi and Flash shock the crowd by announcing the Masked Men are none other than supposedly-recently-retired RAMBLIN’ RICH MYERS and EARL THE PEARL.  Earl takes off his mask first; Rich, however, is hesitant.  When he finally follows Flash’s and Brandi’s orders to take off the mask, that other Masked Man is not Rich Myers at all but rather RYAN McBRIDE, also back in MCW.  Ryan clears house.  This allows JIMMY CICERO and DAN McDEVITT to come to ringside along with the injured NUI TOFIGA, as we will finally get to the source of the “bounty” mishigoss.

Cicero assures Brandi, who seems to be at the heart of all this tzuris, that he will ask the Maryland State Athletic Commission to revoke Brandi’s wrestling license, an action that probably would be recognized by other state commissions and would mark the end of Brandi’s career.  As McDevitt accepts the “present” from Brandi, the MCW owner hits Cicero over the head with the metallic, still-wrapped gift.  McBride is shocked beyond belief; but he gets another shock as he falls victim to a Samoan Drop from Tofiga, miraculously “recovered” from his ankle injury.  (Ernest Angley, anyone?)  Nui then turns his attention to Cicero, who has become the main target of the bounty hunters.  NAPALM BOMB arrives to confront his former partner and is likewise Samoan Dropped for his troubles.  CHRISTIAN YORK comes back to the ring to help; but a revenge-seeking RONNIE ZUKKO attacks him.  As he reveals himself to be the financier of the bounties, McDevitt encourages Tofiga to “go to the next level” and “put somebody in the hospital”.  Nui splashes McBride with a leap off the middle turnbuckle.  The metallic object, now unwrapped, is revealed to be a “Team McDevitt” real estate sign, which Dan uses to cause more pain to Cicero.

With his cohorts Flash, Brandi, Pearl, Tofiga and Zukko standing tall in the middle of the ring and with Cicero lying helpless on the mat with his head propped on the bottom turnbuckle, Dan McDevitt ends the evening by declaring “Cicero, you’re fired!”
