RULING MADE ON CONTROVERSIAL ERICK SILVA DQ; UFC TO BEGIN USING INSTANT REPLAY ON SELF-GOVERNED INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

By Joe Lebeau on 1/19/2012 10:17 PM
Earlier today, Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs with the UFC, Marc Ratner, issued a statement regarding the controversial disqualification loss suffered by Erick Silva at this month's UFC 142 event in Rio.

"Based on the referee's verbal warnings and his determination that the blows were intentional and a disqualifying foul, this is not the type of decision that can be reviewed," Ratner stated. "Therefore, the decision stands."

"Recently, Zuffa has decided to implement the use of instant replay at all international events that are self-regulated, and to encourage all regulators to consider the feasibility and effectiveness of instant replay in the sport of MMA. While instant replay would not have reversed the call in the Silva-Prater bout, we believe that it could be valuable to referees and the sport in the future."

The statement was made in regards to the controversial ending to the Erick Silva vs Carlo Prater bout in Rio. Silva quickly dispatched Prater with strikes, however veteran referee Mario Yamasaki ruled the bout a disqualification due to strikes to the back of the head.

Erick Silva was still compensated with a "win bonus", despite the ruling.
