FIVE ROUNDS WITH UFC ON FUEL TV I

By David Tees on 2/18/2012 12:53 PM

Leave it to two of the best welterweight fighters in the UFC to give the viewers a fight of the year performance on the first official UFC event on Fuel TV. The heavyweight fighters also stepped up as there are now two new contenders amongst the ranks of the UFC big men. Also, one fighter got hurt before making it to the octagon and a UFC Ultimate Fighter Champion got back on top.

Round One: The Dream Is Over

Diego Sanchez has been rebuilding himself on a personal level since falling to the demons of stardom, but he can still deliver inside the octagon. The problem was that he started to deliver in the final minute of the fight, while he was pretty much dominated the other fourteen by Jake Ellenberger. With his unanimous decision victory, Jake Ellenberger now finds himself as the top contender to the UFC Welterweight Title and UFC Interim Welterweight Title respectively. The real question is whether or not Jake Ellenberger is willing to wait for the title versus title fight to take place first.

Next Round For Jake Ellenberger: The Georges St. Pierre/Carlos Condit winner

Next Round For Diego Sanchez: Jon Fitch, Mike Pierce or Dong Hyun Kim

Round Two: The Skyscraper Stands Tall

Stefan Struve has been in the UFC for three years now and the TKO victory over Dave Herman on Wednesday Night may have put him through the glass ceiling. Stefan Struve effectively used his range to put the tough Dave Herman down for the count in the second round. Stefan Struve, who has stated he is willing to wait for bigger fights, may be closer to the bigger name heavyweights than he thinks. As for Dave Herman, focusing more on the fight instead of his pink scarfs will make him a major threat in the UFC.

Next Round For Stefan Struve: Stipe Miocic, Mike Russow or Matt Mitrione

Next Round For Dave Herman: Philip De Fries, Ben Rothwell or Shane Del Rosario

Round Three: One Minute Of Awesome

When two undefeated heavyweights in Stipe Miocic and Philip De Fries step into the octagon, folks know the sparks are going to fly. Those proverbial sparks did fly, at least for a minute as Stipe Miocic knocked out Philip de Fries with some brutal strikes. Stipe Miocic, with the victory, now finds himself thrust into the heavier waters of the UFC Heavyweight Division. The question about Stipe Miocic is how good can he really do against the higher elite level heavyweight strikers.

Next Round For Stipe Miocic: Stefan Struve or the Pat Barry/Lavar Johnson winner

Next Round For Philip De Fries: Mark Hunt, Jon Olav Einemo or Christian Morecraft

Round Four: That How A UFC Ultimate Fighter Champion Should Win

Jonathan Brookins looked like a star in the making when he defeated Michael Johnson to win the UFC Ultimate Fighter 13. Then a drop to featherweight and a decision loss to Erik Koch made the fighter look like he was going to route of Efrain Escudero. However, Jonathan Brookins came back motivated and just destroyed Vagner Rocha to get his first win as a featherweight in the UFC. If Jonathan Brookins can keep putting some wins together, it will not be long before a title shot is in his future.

Next Round For Jonathan Brookins: Chad Mendes or the Bart Palaszewski/Hatsui Hioki loser

Next Round For Vagner Rocha: George Roop, Leonard Garcia or Nam Phan

Round Five: Wasn’t There Four Fights On Facebook?

For those who read my UFC On Fuel TV I Facebook Card Preview on this site and then tuned into Facebook on Wednesday Night to watch preliminary card action, a question may have popped in your head. That question probably had to go along the lines of…where was the fight between Sean Loeffler and Buddy Roberts? The answer would be that middleweight Sean Loeffler badly injured his ankle while warming up backstage and the fight was called off. That could mark the first time this has happened in the UFC since Kevin Randleman was accidentally knocked out backstage before fighting Bas Rutten at an early UFC event.

Next Round For Sean Loeffler: Buddy Roberts
