Just because MMA fans have to wait until Saturday for the UFC does not mean there is no action to catch on Friday Night, thanks to the Legacy Fighting Championships. This Friday Nights card on HDNet features a host of UFC veterans, including top welterweight Gerald Harris. However, there is an unaired preliminary card that is also taking place that features some up and coming talent.
Kicking off the action is a featherweight division fight as Jesus Mendez (0-1-0) does battle with Cody Williams (2-1-0). Jesus Mendez made his professional MMA debut nearly a year ago, suffering a defeat to Aaron Barrios at Warriors Championship Fighting V. Cody Williams has split both of his fights in Legacy, defeating Nate Garza and suffering a defeat to Steve Garcia. This will be a good test to see if Cody Williams can get over .500 in Legacy and he will accomplish that goal Friday Night.
We move up to the lightweight division for the next fight as Ray Blodgett (5-1-0) stands across the cage from Rey “The Truth†Trujillo (9-7-0). Ray Blodgett is currently winless in Legacy competition, suffering a defeat to Daniel Pineda at Legacy VI last year. Rey Trujillo has only won one of six heading into this fight, with two of those losses coming in the Legacy Fighting Championships. This will be a tough challenge for Ray Blodgett, but it will be a test that the MMA fighter is going to be passing.
Up next is another lightweight division battle as Jason Carter (1-1-0) competes against Cody Phillips (1-1-0). It has been nearly two years since Jason Carter last competed in an MMA fight, which was a victory over Dominic Rodriquez. Cody Phillips has spent his whole career in the Atlas Fights promotion, winning one of two fights while there. This will be an exciting battle between two MMA newcomers, but it will be Cody Phillips getting the win in the end.
We remain in the lightweight division for the next contest as Lee “Hoss†Higgins (2-1-0) faces Lee King (15-16-0). Lee Higgins is coming off of the first loss of his MMA career, which was to Ryan Couture at Strikeforce Challengers 14. Despite the losing record, Lee King is undefeated in Legacy, having defeated Mark Garcia at Legacy Fighting Championships 8. This fight is an interesting one for many reasons, but it will be the more experienced Lee King picking up the victory.
Headlining this portion of the card is a bantamweight division affair as Angel “The Chosen One†Huerta (4-0-0) faces Michael “The Texas Showstopper†Sierra (4-5-0). Angel Huerta is currently undefeated in Legacy competition, defeating both Andy Sandoval and Nate Garza. Michael Sierra enters the fight winning two of his last seven, last defeating Saul Elizondo this past August. This fight will be the biggest challenge of Angel Huerta’s MMA career, but he will be rising to the challenge in the end.
