The 6th Anniversary of Showcase Pro Wrestling, a retirement, and a new SPW Heavyweight Champion!!

March 23rd, Attleboro K of C: For the sixth time, in as many years, Showcase Pro Wrestling had their anniversary show in grand fashion. Great drama unfolded as match after match of tremendous wrestling entertained and shocked the sold out crowd on hand.

Fan favorite, Hobo, was first to the ring to get the crowd on its feet and motivated for the evening to come. Hobo did battle with "Nobody's Buddy" Buddy Romano.  If nerves were expected on such a huge night, none were found with these 2 professionals. Hard hitting action went down as the two did battle for several intense minutes. When the dust settled, a dejected Hobo lost the fall, but promised a "dumpster dive" would take place when he defeated David Armando Nieves Flores and the SPW Arena the following night during day two of the anniversary weekend.

In the night's second match, fresh from suspension, "Widowmaker" Eric Shredd took on ring veteran "Nature Boy" Gary Gold.  The stipulation: should Shredd leave the ring under any circumstance; he would lose the match outright.  Two experienced ring warriors took it to each other for several breaths taking minutes.  As had been the problem for Shredd since his suspension, "5 Star Ref" Scott LeDuc came to ring side to distract Shredd. LeDuc, being victimized by a vicious chair shot to the head that resulted is eight staples, had been out to get Shredd since Shredd's return.  Unfortunately for Shredd, LeDuc did gain a small revenge when he distracted Shredd, and caused Shredd to be tossed from the ring to the floor to land the win for Gold.

When "The Man They Call" Barricade's music hit, the crowd was stirred into a frenzy!  The Barricade chant was undeniable as the big man made his way into the ring with the SPW Championship Belt.  He stood tall for a moment before beginning to speak.  The words that came forth, however, no one wanted to hear:  “Due to a severe injury to my left eye, I need to retire from pro wrestling.”  The crowd erupted into an overwhelming shout of “no”.  The crowd in unison then rose to its feet as all the wrestlers surrounded the champion at ringside.  “Thank you, Barricade” chants began and teary eyed champion thanked his promoter, the fans, and especially his wife and not yet born daughter.  While Barricade’s wrestling career may be winding to a close, the man himself will continue to thrive.  There was still a bit of business that needed to be tended to.  He made the announcement that the winner of the night’s Gauntlet match would take home the gold and be crowned, by him, as the new Showcase Pro Wrestling Champion.

Speaking of champions, the tag team tournament continued in the next match as Monster Mack and Trainee #1 did battle with the “Revelation Revolution” Cargill Vinton, and Buck Nasty.  The two teams showed why they were two of the last teams standing.  Regardless of circumstance, one team would be leaving without the title shot, and that team was…Monster Mack.  The match didn’t go off without controversy though.  Nasty and Vinton had their way with the Mack for most of the match, but the Mack was not to be denied.  A furious comeback led by Mack himself fell just short as Nasty laid Mack to the mat for the 1…2…3.  But was it 3?  After further review, Mack’s shoulder may not have been to the canvas, but the 5 star ref was sure about what he saw and awarded the match to The Revolution.  Therefore, on half of the finals in the tag tournament was set…but whom would they face?

In the night’s only billed grudge match, John Thornhill did battle with Tripleicious.  The two set a blistering pace as each tried desperately to gain the upper hand on the other.  True back and forth action transcended as the two hit each other with everything they could.  Only when Tripleicious attempted a roll up and grasped a handful of tights did the match come to an end, but again, not without controversy.  A dejected Thornhill pled his case, but to no avail, and Tripleicious walked away with the victory, and the 5 star ref’s glasses…

With another half of the tag tournament finals to be determined, The Convicts took on Mark “Flex” Damon, and Nicholas Night in the second of two semi-final matches.  Both teams held nothing back as they tried to find the way to meet Vinton and Nasty.  With Sgt. Muldoon in their corner, the Convicts seemed destined to take on Vinton and Nasty the following night.  But, just when all seemed lost, after about twenty hard hitting minutes, Damon and Night scored the pinfall victory and sealed their opportunity to take on Vinton and Nasty in the SPW Tag Team Champion Tournament.

One item was left for decision on this night.  The SPW Heavyweight Championship was still to be awarded.  The Gauntlet match, that had been decided upon earlier, was about to take place.  All that needed to be decided was order of entry, and Cargill Vinton and Monster Mack got the action started.  Every minute thereafter a new combatant entered the ring and tried their best to rise to the top and be the last man standing.  For forty minutes men entered, and were eliminated.  Over and over the field shrunk by one and after most of the dust had settled, two remained.   Vinton and Night stood tall at the end and were set  to finish the quest once and for all.  For ten more minutes the two went at it until finally, after hitting his devastating “Holy Roller” finisher, Vinton pinned Night to attain the SPW Heavyweight Championship.
Barricade, being a man of his word, took to the ring, raised the champions arm, and awarded Vinton with the championship.

What SPW can do for an encore remains to be seen, and will be seen tomorrow night, but until then, I’m signing off until tomorrow night.  Thanks for joining, and we’ll see you at ringside!!
