Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez will face top ranked Josh Thomson for a third time at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier. Melendez has been champion for over two years now, defeating Thomson for the title in their second match. Thomson is coming off of a victory over KJ Noons, which happened at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey a few months ago.
Also, a light heavyweight battle between former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Rafael Cavalcante and Mike Kyle has been booked for the event. Cavalcante has only fought once since losing the title, which was a victory over Yoel Romero Palacio at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitanov. Kyle is also coming off of a win at the same event, defeating Marcos Rogerio De Lima by way of unanimous decision. Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier takes place on May 19th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and it is headlined by Josh Barnett facing Daniel Cormier.
