Born and raised in Malden, Richard was a business owner of Byrne’s Tang Soo Do Karate Studios. He was a Grandmaster 9th degree black belt and Founder of the American Tang Soo Do Association.
Richard was well known as the wrestler Super Star Richard Byrne and was trained by Walter “Killer...” Kowalski. He was an avid motorcycle rider and collector of western memorabilia.
Richard also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era
. Richard was inducted into the New England pro wrestling Hall of Fame in May of 2011 which looking back was a touching end to his career.
Richard was the devoted husband of Paula (Terenzi) Byrne. He was the son of the late John and Anita Byrne and the stepson of Marie (Bonaiuto) Byrne of Malden. Richard was the dear brother of Michael Byrne and Cheryl Beaulieu and the stepbrother of Bobby Sullivan, Diane Callahan, Jean Boland, Maureen Sullivan and John Sullivan. He also leaves his two loving boxers, Jesse and Cody.
The funeral will be held from the A. J. Spadafora Funeral Home, 865 Main Street, Malden on Monday, September 10th at 8:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant Street, Malden at 9:00 a.m.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Sunday, September 9th from 4-8 pm. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
