“UFC TONIGHT” SHOW QUOTES – 10/30/12
Exclusive Junior dos Santos Interview: “Overeem doesn’t deserve to fight for the title.”
UFC Tonight Airs Tuesdays 10:00 PM ET/7:00 PM PT
LOS ANGELES, CA – On this week’s UFC TONIGHT, we have an exclusive interview with UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos. UFC TONIGHT Hosts Todd Harris and Kenny Florian talk to dos Santos about Cain Velasquez, Alistair Overeem, Dana White, Jon Jones and more. Plus we have news about Nick Diaz, Ronda Rousey, Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar and more.
Quote of the Week: Junior dos Santos on Alistair Overeem: “I think he doesn’t deserve to fight for the title. You know this guy, everyone is just talking about him because he failed the drug test and he started to talk a lot of trash, so that is why people are talking about him. Well, his time will come.”
dos Santos on Dana White’s tweet claiming dos Santos wants to fight Overeem over Cain: “I didn’t put Overeem over Cain because they are different. Cain is a real fighter and he sells his fights fighting. It is very different than Overeem. I said that, but it is not the same thing. I keep saying that he doesn’t deserve to fight for the title, but I would love to fight with this guy to put him in his place because I don’t think he is at the same level as me, Cain and other fighters.”
dos Santos on why it took him so long to get back in the Octagon: “Well, I actually don’t know. It was good because this time off gave me time to recover. I was feeling pain in my body. Now I am 100 percent to start my camp. I actually already started. I consider [Cain] as my toughest opponent in the UFC. He is different. He is a really good wrestler. His ground and pound is very tough, so I don’t want to go to the ground to fight him. My first strategy is to fight on my feet and look for the knockout, but if he takes me down and keeps me there, I am going to show you guys my jiu jitsu. I am learning a lot of good things and maybe I can submit someone in the UFC, too.”
dos Santos on if he would move camps: “I feel comfortable in Salvador, but right now the first part of my camp, I’m doing it in San Paulo at Corinthians complex. I am proud of the club now, it is a really famous soccer team in Brazil, but now we have MMA athletes in the club too and I am one of them. This first part I am doing at Corinthians, but the second part I am going to go back to Salvador because the area where I live makes me feel great.”
dos Santos on Overeem’s statement that Velasquez would been him: “That could happen. He is smart. Cain Velasquez is one of the guys that can do that.”
dos Santos on the rumors that he wants to fight Jon Jones: “People like to imagine a lot of things. I think Jon Jones is an amazing fighter. He is really good. He is so confident. I like him, he is very nice with me and I am nice with him. But I don’t care about the other titles, I’ve got the heavyweight belt. There is only one guy at the top of the division and I think it is me. If he moves up to my division, I will think about it. If the UFC puts him up against me, then we will fight.”
“UFC Tonight” Insider Ariel Helwani on Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar: “Here is the official word from UFC President Dana White: the fight will happen on February 2, during Super Bowl weekend in Vegas. That card is UFC 156. There were some reports that it would be 157.”
Helwani on Aldo’s health after his motorcycle accident: “You know, I spoke to Aldo a few weeks ago in Brazil at UFC 153. He said that he was almost cleared by his doctor, that he had some pretty nasty wounds on his legs and he had pink eye. But now that this is announced for a few months from now, he should be good to go.”
Florian on Aldo vs. Edgar: “This is the fight that should have happened. These are the top 145 pounders. Even though Edgar hasn’t fought at 145, he should be there. This is a fight that everyone wants to see. That last fight against Henderson could have gone either way.”
Helwani on if the extra time is an advantage for Edgar: “Frankie is at that weight where he really doesn’t have to do a crazy weight cut, so in terms of that, it isn’t going to help him much. But, it gives him more time to prepare, watching and breaking down tape.”
Florian on if Edgar has a chance against Aldo: “If there is one guy who can do it, it is Edgar. He has the speed to get in and out with his boxing.”
Helwani on a possible Michael Bisping vs. Vitor Belfort: “Latest is that according to UFC President Dana White nothing is official. I can report that it was talked about and it was even offered to one of the fighters for January 13 in Brazil. But, it is not a done deal.”
Helwani on Anthony Pettis’ hospitalization: “Pettis was hospitalized early last week for cellulitis. He had an infection in his elbow. He was hospitalized, took some antibiotics and he is good now. According to him, he is training for a January 26th fight against Donald Cerrone. He is confused as to why Cerrone is talking smack again. In his opinion he is fighting on January 26th against him. I asked him if he beats Cerrone, if he thinks he’d be the number-one contender and he said he is not even thinking about it anymore. He has been promised two title fights before that didn’t happen, so until he signs a contract, he is not even worried about a title fight anymore.”
Helwani on Junior dos Santos’ possible Nike contract: “Exciting news for the heavyweight champion, he is close to signing a deal with Nike. He would be the third fighter to sign a deal with Nike. Anderson Silva was the first, then Jon Jones. There are talks that he might even rock the Swoosh at UFC 155.
Helwani on the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil:” “Yeah it is a done deal. Antonio “Big Nog” Nogueira will coach opposite of Fabricio Werdum. They will begin taping on January 27th and right now their fight is slated to take place on June 8 in Brazil.”
Florian on what made Dana White change his mind about starting a women’s division: “You know I think it is the emergence of Ronda Rousey and how popular she has become. It is also evidence of so many women getting into the sport and the growing division. Because really, there are a lot of women out there and you can put together one or two divisions. I think that Dana White sees the opportunity to make money.”
Florian on Josh Koscheck’s tweet about fighting Nick Diaz: “I am a huge Nick Diaz fan, so anytime he is going to fight, I’m going to be excited. But if I am Cesar Gracie (Nick’s Manager), I wouldn’t want to fight Josh Koshcheck because he matches up so well against Nick Diaz. Koscheck is a great wrestler and Diaz has trouble with wrestlers.”
Florian on if Chael Sonnen should look to Anderson Silva as a training partner in the upcoming TUF: “Interesting. Anderson Silva for striking, yes, that is a good idea. Anderson Silva is a dynamic striker and so is Jones, but for wrestling, not so much. I don’t think there is anyone like Jon Jones out there, so good luck, Chael.”
