The first Strikeforce Welterweight Title defense is set for Nate Marquardt as he will defend the gold against Tarec Saffiedine. Marquardt captured the welterweight title at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy, defeating Tyron Woodley by TKO. Saffiedine earned an opportunity at the title when he defeated Roger Bowling by unanimous decision at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman. The yet unnamed Strikeforce event will take place this January with a location and headliner to be announced.
