UFC ON FUEL TV 6 Postfight Show on FUEL TV Quotes – 11/10/12
Le: “I saw [Franklin] timing my kicks, so I waited for him to punch and then threw that overhead right and got lucky.”
Stann and Cruz break down fights and victories.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The following quotes are from today’s UFC Postfight Show on FUEL TV, for UFC ON FUEL TV 6: FRANKLIN VS. LE. Hosted by Jay Glazer, UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz and middleweight Brian Stann offered analysis from FUEL TV’s Los Angeles studios. Longtime British MMA Journalist Gareth A Davies conducted fighter interviews.
“UFC Postfight Show” Analyst Brian Stann on Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le: “Cung Le came out slower than expected and he had his feet planted. Franklin had the movement and kept the feet moving. Then, out of nowhere, Cung Le comes out with a punch. It was definitely a slower pace that we saw from Cung in the first round, but he was able to counter punch with power. His hips were loaded going into that punch. He got his entire body into the hook.”
“UFC Postfight Show” Analyst Dominick Cruz on Franklin vs. Le: “I want to give Cung Le kudos because in his past fights he would come out blazing, but this time he took his time. He found the pace and he was able to come up with the counter in doing so. Cung was able to hit him with the counter left hook and that’s how it goes. The right hook that he threw was exactly the south paw position. There are a couple reasons he came out slow in the beginning. One, it’s a five-round fight. Two, he knew Franklin is a seasoned striker and he knew he had to be patient and watch him take his time and then boom, he got him.”
Cung Le tells “UFC Postfight Show” Reporter Gareth A Davies how he feels about his victory: “I’ve got to say wow! It’s like a dream. I feel like I’m in a dream right now. Thank you, lord. You know, I just saw him timing my kicks, so I waited for him to punch and then threw that overhead right and I got lucky and hit him.”
Le on the knockout punch: “That was a money punch. I just want to thank my trainer Scott, who had three months away from his family and kids and had to deal with my stuff and my kids, because they are wild. I am just so thankful to be here in China in the first UFC fight. Thanks Dana and Lorenzo for letting me headline their card and, of course, Joe Silva for making this card happen. I want to thank everyone who came out.”
Le on his next move: “I love to do mixed martial arts. I love to compete. If I can do it as long as I live, I‘ll do it. But I know my clock is ticking, so I am just doing my best. I definitely want to take a little vacation before I start training to let my body heal up. You know when I hit him, I felt my shoulder jolt a little, but it was just a lot of adrenaline going.”
Stann on Le’s next move: “You know, I can’t say what can be next. He has a movie coming out. What a humble guy. You know I’d be honored to fight him and I don’t want to call him out after this, but hey, I’d be happy to fight him. Mark Munoz would be a really interesting matchup for him. Regardless, he always goes in there and puts in a great performance and that is why he is a headliner.”
Cruz on what Le should do next: “I’d love to see the fight between Alan Belcher and Yushin Okami, and then the winner gets to fight Le. Belcher is an outstanding striker, kicker, everything and then you have Okami who is just a powerhouse and as strong as they come. I think it can really compare to what Le has been doing. The reason he has been so successful is because he really resembles what MMA should become. He is good with his striking and his takedowns, which means people don’t know what to do with a fighter like that.”
UFC Analyst Kenny Florian on Franklin vs. Le: “You know Le was the underdog heading into this fight. If there was a way he was going to get it done, it was going to be early. Le had the speed advantage. He was in control and as soon as Franklin retracted his kick, Le was right there to counter with the right hook and that was it.”
Florian on what this loss will do to Franklin: “In this sport you have the biggest highs and the biggest lows. Getting caught with that shot and that knockout, it’s going to be hard to come back from that. But for anyone to come back, Rich is very strong and I am sure we will see him come back from that.”
Stann on Thiago Silva vs. Stanislav Nedkov: “These are two big, powerful individuals. Silva came out a little different and we haven’t seen much of Nedkov. Thiago Silva came out bouncing on his feet, he hasn’t done that before. He let the Bulgarian get him on the cage a little bit. Thiago gets rocked badly in the second round, almost gets finished. But, in the third round Nedkov got really tired and Silva is able to mount him, then pass to full side mount and choke him out. This was a very impressive comeback victory for Thiago Silva.”
Cruz on Silva vs. Nedkov: “Nedkov went out there throwing power hooks with no timing and then by the third round he was like, what am I doing here? I would have liked to see Silva throwing more uppercuts. I liked the game plan though, and I could tell the corners were telling him to do other things and he was able to work on Nedkov until he gassed out. What won him that fight was experience. Truth be told, in the third round Nedkov was exhausted and you saw him take a few steps back and Silva took him down like a NCAA wrestler. He came in shape, Nedkov looked tired.”
Thiago Silva about his victory over Nedkov: “It was a hard fight you know. Nedkov is a tough fighter. In the second round he got me with a good punch, I felt it. But, I am a tough guy and I am here to fight and I never give up.”
Silva on his new coaching: “I am very happy with this because since I moved to the Blackzilians I am having good training, good coaching, good teammates and that is the result, a good fight.”
Silva on if he saw Nedkov gas out in the third round: “I knew because I saw his face. He just changed his face, so I took his legs and put him down. I used the right opportunity.”
Silva on who he’d like to fight next: “Yeah you know, I never pick fighters. I want to fight the best fighters of my division. I just want to fight the tough guys and I want to be the champion one day. I want the title and I am working hard for this.”
Silva on his hurt leg: “Yeah it’s okay. I’m just feeling a little sore. I’m going to the doctor to make sure, but yeah, I’m fine. I’m a warrior.”
Cruz on Silva vs. Nedkov: “I think what took place in the third round started with the way that Silva ate that punch that Nedkov threw in the second round. Silva came out in the third round and had that kill face on like he always does. It probably freaked out Nedkov because he was like ‘damn I gave him a hard punch like that and he took it.’”
Stann on Dong Hyun Kim’s victory over Paulo Thiago: “It was a classic performance with judo takedowns and taking top position. Paulo Thiago is known as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, but Dong really dominated him. Dong talked about the strength he lost in traveling and it paid off this time when he didn’t have to do it.”
Cruz on Kim’s victory over Thiago: “I was more shocked and impressed. Over and over he took control from the cradle position on Octagon. Doing this really wears down the other fighter. You’re told ‘position before submission’ from your coaches and he did that today.”
Dong Hyun Kim on how he prepared for his victory over Thiago: “We have researched Thiago and knew he was weak from the inside position. Maybe the time difference and travel made him weaker as well.”
Kim on if less travel time made a difference: “It was a complete difference fighting here, like the difference between night and day.”
Kim on who he wants to fight next: “Demian Maia.”
Cruz on Takanori Gomi vs. Mac Danzig: “We have been waiting to see that Gomi fight for a long time. This is the best he has ever looked. We saw Gomi go at Danzig with more kicks than we have ever seen. He had good takedowns. He was eating shots and showing durability. He was able to do it by getting out of some fishy situations. Then he comes out with a win. This is the best we have seen him in a long time.”
Stann on Jon Tuck’s victory over Tiequan Zhang: “We saw some big improvements by Zhang this time. Tuck has great transitions. A lot of people thought Zhang was going to get rocked in this fight, but it was a very exciting fight. In the end, Tuck was just too much for him.”
Cruz on Tuck’s victory: “He’s never been out of the first round. He showed some holes in his game this time.”
Carlos Condit on how he is preparing to fight Georges St-Pierre at UFC 154: “The last nine to ten months I’ve been really trying to improve some aspects of my game that I thought were lacking; really improve my technique and a lot of things I learned ten years ago and have come a long way and evolved. I’ve learned a lot of new things. I got stronger. I got powerful. I got faster.”
Condit on the warrior that comes out during fight day: “I would say there are glimpses of that that start to shine through a couple weeks before the fight. But especially in the fight, I go to a dark place man. It is something I have kind of harnessed for something positive in my life. It’s getting in the cage and beating somebody down.”
Condit on how he plans to beat GSP: “To beat Georges, one of the best guys who has ever stepped in the Octagon, I am really going to have to draw on my toughness and those things and assets that I think are overlooked.”
Condit on how he is going to handle GSP’s grappling skills: “I have been working a lot on my wrestling. That being said, he has taken down a lot better wrestlers than me. What separates my ground game from other guys in the past is I incorporate a lot of striking. You know, I think I will be able to keep the fight going and not let him use his smothering top game and very methodical approach to holding me down.”
Stann on Condit: “He has improved. Everyone looks for slivers of opportunities to land the punches against GSP. But, he doesn’t give you much room and Condit is working on everything to change the game.”
