UFC ON FOX IX MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 12/13/2013 9:43 AM

The final UFC event prior to the Christmas season takes place on Saturday Night with the big UFC On Fox IX card. This event will be headlined by a rematch for the UFC Flyweight Title as champion Demetrious Johnson defends against Joseph Benavidez. Also, Urijah Faber battles Michael McDonald for a potential title shot and Chad Mendes looks to move up the featherweight ranks.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division affair as Mac Danzig (21-11-1) competes against Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (22-9-0). Danzig has only won one of his last four fights, with that lone victory coming over Efrain Escudero at UFC 145. Lauzon has also won just one of his last four fights, with his lone victory coming over Jamie Varner at UFC On Fox IV. This is a must win situation for both fighters if they are to remain a threat in the division and it will be Lauzon getting that win.

A pair of featherweights will collide next as Nik “The Carny” Lentz (24-5-2-1NC) battles Chad “Money” Mendes (15-1-0). Lentz has been undefeated as a featherweight in the UFC, most notably defeating Diego Nunes at UFC On FX VII. Mendes will enter the fight riding a four fight winning streak, last defeating Clay Guida at UFC 164. Mendes could be a victory or two away from another shot at UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo and he will get the win to earn another shot.

Up next is a bantamweight division attraction as “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (29-6-0) takes on Michael “Mayday” McDonald (16-2-0). Faber will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, with his last loss coming to current UFC Interim Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao at UFC 149. McDonald has won five of six under the UFC banner, with his lone UFC loss coming to the aforementioned Renan Barao. The winner of this shot could be the first one to challenge the undisputed champion next and it will be Faber getting another opportunity.

Headlining this card is a UFC Flyweight Title bout as champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (18-2-1) defends against Joseph Benavidez (19-3-0). Johnson won the first bout between the two at UFC 152 and he has already defended the championship twice. Benavidez will enter the rematch riding a three fight winning streak, most notably defeating Jussier Formiga at UFC Fight Night 28. Benavidez will be a lot more competitive the second time around, but Johnson will do just enough to keep the belt around his waist.
