Georges St. Pierre is now the former UFC Welterweight Champion after vacating the belt to take a long leave of absence from MMA competition. Citing issues and other personal problems, GSP has decided to step away and lets others battle for the championship. GSP has been a professional MMA fighter for over eleven years and has been UFC Welterweight Champion twice, defeating both Matt Hughes and Matt Serra for his respective title wins.
GSP has fought other top names as well like Ivan Menjivar, Pete Spratt, Karo Parisyan, Jay Hieron, Jason Miller, Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk, BJ Penn, Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Jake Shields, Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz and Johny Hendricks. GSP’s last fight was a controversial title defense over the aforementioned Hendricks at UFC 167, which he won by split decision. GSP stated in a press conference that he will one day return to the sport, but it will not be for a very long time.
