UFC FIGHT NIGHT 35 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/14/2014 3:01 PM

Starting off a big weekend of action will be a loaded UFC Fight Night 35 card, which features a lot of great fighters in action. The event will be headlined by a key middleweight division bout as Luke Rockhold looks for his first UFC win over Constantinos Philippou. Also, Brad Tavares battles Lorenz Larkin and there will be a potentially huge fight in the UFC Bantamweight Division.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division attraction as Cole “Magrinho” Miller (20-8-0) competes against Sam Sicilia (12-3-0). Miller has won two of five as a featherweight in the UFC, most notably defeating Bart Palaszewski at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. Sicilia has only won one of his last three fights, with that lone win coming over Godofredo Castro at UFC Fight Night 32. This is a must win scenario for both fighters in this one and it will be Miller using his superior ground game to get the win.

A pair of flyweights will be in action next as John Moraga (13-2-0) is in action against Dustin Ortiz (12-2-0). Moraga will be fighting for the first time since losing a UFC Flyweight Title bout to Demetrious Johnson at UFC On Fox VIII. Ortiz is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Jose Maria Tome at UFC Fight Night 32. Moraga earned a title shot for a very good reason and he will get closer to another shot when he defeats Ortiz.

Middleweights will be in the octagon next as Derek Brunson (11-2-0) does battle with Yoel “Soldier Of God” Romero (6-1-0). Brunson is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated both Chris Leben and Brian Houston. Romero is also undefeated under the UFC banner, with his victories coming over Clifford Starkes and Ronny Markes. This is a battle between two top prospects in the middleweight division and it will be Romero defeating Brunson to move up the prospect list.

The bantamweight division will be featured next as TJ Dillashaw (8-2-0) battles Mike “The Hulk” Easton (13-3-0). Dillashaw has won four of his last five fights in the UFC, with that loss coming to Raphael Assuncao at UFC Fight Night 29. Easton will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, dropping fights to both Raphael Assuncao and Brad Pickett. This is a must win bout as the division is wide open right now and it will be Dillashaw notching a return to the win column.

Up next is a middleweight division contest as Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (14-1-0-1NC) faces Brad Tavares (11-1-0). Larkin will be looking to build on the momentum of his first UFC victory, which came over Chris Camozzi at UFC Fights For The Troops III. Tavares will enter the fight riding a four fight winning streak, with a notable victory over Tom Watson at UFC On Fuel TV V. Tavares has been a fighter who is on the verge of a breakthrough and that is what he will do after he defeats Larkin in this one.

Headlining this card is a middleweight division fight as Luke Rockhold (10-2-0) takes on Constantinos Philippou (12-3-0-1NC). Rockhold is currently winless in UFC competition and he was the final Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. Philippou has won five of his last six fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Tim Boetsch at UFC 155. Rockhold has not been that impressive since coming over to the UFC, but that will change as he defeats Philippou in the main event.
