UFC ON FOX X MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/24/2014 11:00 AM

Capping off another big weekend of action is another loaded card on the Fox Network from the Ultimate Fighting Championships. This weekend’s big event features a headlining bout pitting two of the UFC’s best lightweights against each other, as Ben Henderson faces Josh Thomson. Also, two of the UFC’s best heavyweight battle it out and Jeremy Stephens looks to remain undefeated as a featherweight.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division fight as Darren Elkins (17-3-0) competes against Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stephens (22-9-0). Elkins has won six of his last seven under the UFC banner, with a notable victory over Hatsu Hioki at UFC Fight Night 27. Stephens is currently undefeated as a featherweight in the UFC, defeating both Estevan Payan and Rony Jason. The winner of this fight could find themselves in the top ten of the featherweight rankings and it will be Stephens remaining undefeated as a featherweight.

Lightweight division action will be happening next as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (21-6-0) battles Adriano Martins (25-6-0). Cerrone has rotated wins and losses in his last five UFC fights, with his last fight being a victory over Evan Dunham at UFC 167. Martins is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Daron Cruickshank at UFC Fight Night 32. Martins is stepping up big time in the level of competition he is facing and he will stumble as Cerrone defeats him.

Up next is a heavyweight division attraction as Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga (16-7-0) takes on Stipe Miocic (10-1-0). Gonzaga has won four of five fights in his second UFC run, most notably defeating Ben Rothwell at UFC On FX VII. Miocic has won four of five under the UFC banner, last defeating Roy Nelson by unanimous decision at UFC 161. The winner of this fight could find themselves in title contention and it will be Miocic getting closer to that shot.

Headlining this card is a lightweight division bout as Ben “Smooth” Henderson (19-3-0) faces Josh “The Punk” Thomson (20-5-0-1NC). Henderson will be competing for the first time since losing his UFC Lightweight Title to Anthony Pettis at UFC 164. Thomson has been undefeated in his second UFC run, having defeated Nate Diaz by TKO at UFC On Fox VII. This fight may be an early candidate for “fight of the year”, but it will be Thomson shocking Henderson to pull the upset.
