UFC 169 FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 1/30/2014 10:28 AM

While the Super Bowl will be on everybody’s mind this coming Sunday, it will be UFC 169 that occupies our minds on Saturday. While the pay-per-view itself will be headlined by a pair of title bouts, there are still four excellent bouts airing on Fox Sports 1. Of those four preliminary card bouts on Fox Sports 1, one will be a key lightweight division fight and one of the UK’s best returns to the octagon.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division attraction as Al Iaquinta (7-2-1) competes against Kevin Lee (7-0-0). Iaquinta will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, most notably defeating Ryan Couture at UFC 164. Lee will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he has previously defeated Bellator veteran JP Reese. Lee has a bright future ahead of him, but he will stumble as Iaquinta will end the undefeated streak of Lee.

Middleweights will be stepping into the octagon next as Nick “The Jersey Devil” Catone (9-4-0) battles Tom “Kong” Watson (16-6-0). Catone will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak and he has not won a fight in almost two years. Watson has won one of three fights under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Stanislav Nedkov at UFC On Fuel TV VII. This is a must win situation for both competitors, but it will be Watson out striking Catone to get the victory.

Up next is a flyweight division affair as Chris “Kamikaze” Cariaso (15-5-0) takes on Danny “The Gremlin” Martinez (16-4-0). Cariaso has only won one of his last three bouts in the UFC, with that lone win coming over Illiarde Santos at UFC Fight Night 29. Martinez will make his UFC debut riding a four fight winning streak and he has previously competed in the WEC. Cariaso has been stumbling as of late, but he will rebound to defeat Martinez to get his career back on track.

Headlining this portion of the card is a lightweight division fight as John “The Bull” Makdessi (12-2-0) faces Alan “Nuguette” Patrick (11-0-0). Makdessi will be entering the fight riding a three fight winning streak, last defeating Renee Forte at UFC 165. Patrick has won his only other UFC appearance, having defeated Garrett Whiteley at UFC Fight Night 29. This fight will be one of the biggest tests that Makdessi has faced in the UFC, but he will pass the test to end Patrick’s undefeated streak.
