UFC 171 PAY-PER-VIEW CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/14/2014 9:32 AM

Concluding another big weekend of mixed martial arts action will be another stellar pay-per-view card from the UFC. This event will be headlined by the crowning of a new welterweight champion as Johny Hendricks faces Robbie Lawler. Also, Carlos Condit faces Tyron Woodley for a potential title shot and Myles Jury gets the biggest fight of his career.

Kicking off the action is a light heavyweight division bout as Nikita “Al Capone” Krylov (16-3-0) competes against Ovince St. Preux (14-5-0). Krylov will be making his light heavyweight debut in this bout, going 1-1-0 as a heavyweight in the UFC. St. Preux is currently undefeated in UFC competition, defeating both Gian Villante and Cody Donovan. St. Preux is quickly becoming a rising star under the UFC banner and his star will rise when he defeats Krylov.

Welterweight division action takes place next as Hector “Lightning” Lombard (33-4-1-1NC) does battle against Jake Shields (29-6-1-1NC). Lombard is currently undefeated as a welterweight in UFC competition, defeating Nate Marquardt at UFC 166. Shields will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, most notably defeating Damien Maia at UFC Fight Night 29. The majority of this fight should be contested on the ground, which is where Shields will grind out a fourth straight victory.

A pair of lightweights will collide next as Myles “The Fury” Jury (13-0-0) battles Diego “The Dream” Sanchez (24-6-0). Jury has won all four of his previous UFC appearances, with a notable victory coming over Michael Johnson at UFC 155. Sanchez has rotated wins and losses in his last four UFC bouts, with his last bout being a loss to Gilbert Melendez at UFC 166. This fight is easily the biggest fight of Jury's career and he will take advantage of the opportunity by getting the big win.

Up next is a welterweight division attraction as Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit (29-7-0) faces Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley (12-2-0). Condit has only won one of his last three bouts, with that lone win coming over Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 27. Woodley has won two of three fights under the UFC banner, last defeating Josh Koscheck by knockout at UFC 167. The winner of this fight could find himself getting a title shot and it will be Woodley using his wrestling to get that shot.

Headlining this card is a fight for the vacant UFC Welterweight Title as Johny “Big Rig” Hendricks (15-2-0) takes on “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (22-9-0-1NC). Hendricks will be competing for the first time since losing a UFC Welterweight Title fight to then champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 167. Lawler has been undefeated since returning to the UFC, with notable victories over both Josh Koscheck and Rory MacDonald. These are two of the better power strikers in the UFC, but it will be Lawler shocking to world to win the championship.
