BELLATOR 113 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/17/2014 6:41 PM

The light heavyweight championship controversy comes to an end this Friday Night when the long anticipated title unification bout headlines Bellator 113. The two champions competing in this headlining bout is Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Attila Vegh and Bellator Interim Light Heavyweight Champion Emanuel Newton. Also, the lightweight tournament begins with notables like David Rickels, Patricky Freire and Marcin Held looking for a title shot.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight tournament opening round bout as Derek “The Stallion” Campos (13-3-0) competes against Tim “Cheapshot” Welch (10-4-0). Campos will enter the tournament riding a four fight winning streak, which includes a win over top MMA prospect Derrick Krantz. Welch is a late addition to the tournament field, as he is replacing an injured UFC veteran in Terry Etim. A lack of time to prepare is going to affect Welch in this one as Campos walks away with a ticket to the semi-finals.

Another lightweight tournament opening round bout is next as Rodrigo Cavalheiro (14-2-0) battles Marcin Held (16-3-0). Cavalheiro enters the tournament on a ten fight winning streak, with only one of those fights going to a decision. Held has competed in two previous Bellator tournaments, making it to the finals in season eight before losing to Dave Jansen in the finals. Cavalheiro is riding an incredible wave of momentum heading into the tournament and he will add to that momentum when he shocks Held to advance.

Up next is a lightweight tournament opening round bout as Patricky “Pitbull” Freire (11-5-0) takes on David “The Caveman” Rickels (15-2-0). Freire has only won two of his last six under the Bellator banner, with one of those losses coming to Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez. Rickels was the winner of the season nine lightweight tournament, but he lost his subsequent title fight to Michael Chandler at Bellator 97. Freire is competing in this tournament based on his name alone, Rickels is going to get the win for another trip to the semi-finals.

Headlining this card is a Bellator Light Heavyweight Title Unification Fight as Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Attila “Pumukli” Vegh (29-4-2) faces Bellator Interim Light Heavyweight Champion Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton (22-7-1). Vegh will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Christian M'Pumbu at Bellator 91. Newton will also be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating King Mo at Bellator 106. This is a historical fight for the Bellator promotion as it is the first title unification fight the promotion has ever had, but it will be Vegh leaving as the undisputed champion.
