UFC FIGHT NIGHT 38 FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/21/2014 9:33 AM

One could assume that the UFC has seemingly found a new permanent home in Brazil, as this will be the third event the promotion has run in the country this year. This event will be headlined by a highly anticipated light heavyweight division rematch as Mauricio Rua faces Dan Henderson. Four fights will be part of the Fox Sports 1 portion of the preliminary card, including a big flyweight division bout between Jussier Formiga and Scott Jorgensen.

Kicking off the action is a welterweight division affair as Thiago “Bodao” Perpetuo (9-2-1) competes against Kenny Robertson (12-3-0). Perpetuo will be looking to rebound from his first loss in the UFC, which came to Omari Akhmedov at UFC Fight Night 32. Robertson has only won one of four in his two UFC runs, with that lone win coming over Brock Jardine at UFC 157. This is a must win situation for both competitors and it will be the wrestling style of Robertson garnering him a victory.

Flyweight division action is up next as Jussier Formiga (15-3-0) takes on Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen (14-8-0). Formiga has won just one of three under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Chris Cariaso at UFC On FX VIII. Jorgensen is currently winless as a flyweight in the UFC, dropping a fight to Zach Makovsky at UFC On Fox IX. This is another must win situation for some fighters on this card, but Jorgensens better striking will get him the duke.

Up next is a middleweight division fight as Rony Markes (14-2-0) battles Thiago “Marreta” Santos (8-2-0). Markes has won three of four fights in UFC competition, most notably defeating Aaron Simpson at UFC On Fuel TV I. Santos is currently winless in his UFC run, with his lone loss coming to Cezar Ferreira by submission at UFC 163. Markes may have stumbled in his last UFC appearance, but he will rebound quite well when he defeats Santos.

Headlining this portion of the card is a featherweight division bout as Diego “DB” Brandao (18-9-0) faces Will “The Kill” Chope (19-6-0). Brandao has won four of six fights under the UFC banner and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 14. Chope is currently winless in UFC competition, having dropped a fight to Max Hollaway at UFC Fight Night 34. Brandao is known for his wild style and that wild style will earn him a victory over Chope in this feature fight.
