BELLATOR 114 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 3/26/2014 6:09 PM

Every event thus far in the tenth season on the Bellator Fighting Championships has featured a title bout and Bellator 114 is no different. That is because Bellator 114 will be headlined by a middleweight title defense at champion Alexander Shlemenko defends against Brennan Ward. Also, the season ten middleweight tournament begins and the featherweight tournament semi-finals take place.

Kicking off the action is a middleweight tournament opening round bout as Brett “Fudoshin” Cooper (19-9-0) competes against Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove (19-13-0-1NC). Cooper will be competing for the first time since losing a Bellator Middleweight Title fight to Alexander Shlemenko at Bellator 98. Grove is a UFC veteran who is undefeated in Bellator competition, having defeated Joe Vedepo at Bellator 104. Grove's best days as a fighter are far behind him at this point in his career and Cooper will get the win to advance to the finals.

A featherweight tournament semi-final round bout is next as Matt “The Mangler” Bessette (13-4-0) battles Daniel “The Weasel” Weichel (32-8-0). Bessette pulled the biggest upset in the first round, when he defeated UFC veteran Diego Nunes at Bellator 110. Weichel punched his ticket to the tournament semi-finals when he defeated Scott Cleve at Bellator 110. Bessette is riding a big wave of momentum after defeating Nunes and he will ride the momentum to defeat Weichel in this one.

Up next is a featherweight tournament semi-final fight as Desmond “The Predator” Green (10-2-0) takes on Will Martinez (9-2-1). Green advanced to the tournament semi-finals after defeating Mike Richman by decision at Bellator 110. Martinez pulled an upset to advance at Bellator 110 when he defeated Goiti Yamauchi by decision. Neither of these fighters where expected to make it to the semi-finals, but it will be Green going to the finals.

Headlining this card is a Bellator Middleweight Title fight as champion Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko (49-7-0) defends against “The Irish Bad Boy” Brennan Ward (9-1-0). Shlemenko will be making the third defense of his championship, last defending it against Doug Marshall at Bellator 109. Ward earned the title shot when he won the season nine middleweight tournament, defeating Mikkel Parlo in the finals. Shlemenko has yet to really be challenged thus far as the champion and he will keep the gold again when he defeats Ward.
