BELLATOR 117 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 4/16/2014 8:21 AM

Capping off the second of three nights of big time MMA action will be another loaded card from the Bellator Fighting Championships. This event will be headlined by a bout for the vacant welterweight title as Rick Hawn faces Douglas Lima. The preliminary card is loaded as well, with top names like UFC veterans Houston Alexander, Anthony Smith and Joe Vedepo in action.

Kicking off the action is a light heavyweight division fight as Houston “The Assassin” Alexander (15-10-0-2NC) competes against Matt Uhde (3-4-0). Alexander is a veteran of the UFC and he is currently winless in Bellator, losing to Vladimir Matyushenko at Bellator 99. Uhde will enter the fight riding a four fight losing streak and he has not won a fight in well over two years. It seems like Bellator is just handing Alexander a target to punch in Uhde, Alexander will dominate to get the win.

A pair of lightweights will battle next as Martin “Trey” Brown (4-2-0) is in action against Jared “Demon Eyes” Downing (9-4-0). Brown will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, but he has not competed in almost two years. Downing is currently winless in Bellator competition, dropping fights to both Patricio Freire and Rob Emerson. Downing has fought far better competition when compared to Brown and that experience will get him the victory.

More lightweight division action is up next as LaRue Burley (3-0-0) does battle against Cliff Wright (8-5-0). Burley is coming off of the biggest win of his young MMA career, having defeated Bubba Jenkins at Bellator 100. Wright has won two of five under the Bellator banner, but his last fight was a win over Derek Loffer at Bellator 104. Burley is riding a big wave of momentum after defeating Jenkins and he will continue to ride the momentum when he defeats Wright.

Middleweight division action will be happening next as Ben Crowder (10-11-0) dukes it out with Joe “The Doctor” Vedepo (14-8-0). Crowder has won four of his last five fights and he is a longtime veteran of the Midwest Fighting Championships. Vedepo is a veteran of UFC competition and he will be entering the fight riding a three fight losing streak. Vedepo better days are behind him at this point in his career, Crowder will pull the upset to get his record to .500.

Another middleweight division bout is on the card as Victor Moreno (32-19-0) battles Anthony “Lionheart” Smith (17-11-0). Moreno will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak and he has not won a fight in over a full year. Smith is a veteran of the Ultimate Fighting Championships and he is currently on a three fight losing streak. This fight has the potential to be the show stealer for this card, but it will be Smith rebounding to get the win.

Up next is a featherweight division contest as Josh Arocho (13-12-0) takes on Julio Cesar “Morceguinho” Neves Jr. (28-0-0). Arocho will enter the fight riding a three fight losing streak and he has not won a fight in over three years. Neves Jr. will be making his Bellator debut in this fight and he has spent the majority of his career competing in Brazil. Neves Jr. has practically padded his record by fighting vastly over matched foes, Arocho will end his undefeated streak in the end.

Headlining this portion of the card is a lightweight division affair as Tim Bazer (14-15-0) faces Jordan “Pretty Boy” Parsons (9-1-0). Bazer has won three of his last four fights and he is a veteran of the Victory Fighting Championships promotion. Parsons will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak and this fight will mark his Bellator debut. Bazer is easily the most experienced opponent that Parsons has faced, but Parsons will overcome that to get the duke.
