BELLATOR 120 SPIKE TV PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 5/15/2014 8:05 AM

The biggest night in Bellator's history is coming up as the promotion will be putting on its first pay-per-view this weekend. The event was ravaged by injuries, but will still be headlined by a tournament final between Rampage Jackson and King Mo. There are four fights airing on the Spike TV portion of the preliminary card, with UFC veteran Cheick Kongo in the featured spot.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division bout as Mike “The Marine” Richman (16-4-0) competes against Goiti Yamauchi (16-2-0). Richman is a multiple time tournament competitor, making it to the finals of the season nine featherweight tournament. Yamauchi competed in the season ten featherweight tournament, losing to Will Martinez in the opening round. These are two of the better featherweights in the entire promotion, but it will be Richman out striking Yamauchi to get the win.

More featherweight action is next as Fabricio Guerreiro (19-3-0-1NC) battles Shahbulat “Assassin” Shamhalaev (12-2-1). Guerreiro competed in the season nine featherweight tournament, losing to Patricio Freire in the semi-finals. Shamhalaev will be fighting for the first time since losing a featherweight title bout to Pat Curran at Bellator 95. These are two competitors who want a return trip to the tournament and it will be Shamhalaev getting that opportunity as he achieves victory.

Up next is a lightweight division bout as Marcin Held (18-3-0) takes on Nate “Ladies Love” Jolly (13-5-0). Held was originally set to be competing in the lightweight tournament finals until opponent Patricky Freire suffered an injury. Jolly was originally set to fight Will Brooks on the pay-per-view until the Eddie Alvarez injury caused some card changes. This fight was a last second addition to the card, but Held is dangerous enough to get the quick win on Jolly.

Headlining this portion of the card is a heavyweight division bout as Cheick Kongo (20-9-2) faces Eric Smith (6-1-0-1NC). Kongo will be fighting for the first time since losing a heavyweight title fight to Vitaly Minakov at Bellator 115. Smith will be making his Bellator debut in this fight, but he has previously defeated UFC veteran Cody Donovan. Smith is vastly outmatched when compared to Kongo, Kongo will get the win to get another shot in a future tournament.
