UFC FIGHT NIGHT 44 FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 6/26/2014 5:40 PM

Capping off the second double header of the year for the UFC is a loaded UFC Fight Night 44 event airing on Fox Sports 1. The event is going to be headlined by a big featherweight division affair as Cub Swanson battles Jeremy Stephens. There are four fights airing on the Fox Sports 1 Preliminary Card, featuring a TUF Champion in the featured spot.

Kicking off the action is a flyweight division bout as Ray “The Tazmexican Devil” Borg (6-1-0) competes against Shane Howell (13-7-0). Borg is currently winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to Dustin Ortiz at UFC On Fox 11. Howell will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he has previously defeated UFC veteran Tim Elliot. Borg was robbed in some folks opinions in his UFC debut and he will right the wrong this time around as he defeats Howell.

A pair of welterweights will collide next as Andy “Tank Mode” Enz (7-1-0) battles Marcelo “Magrao” Guimaraes (8-1-1). Enz is currently winless during his UFC run, having dropped a fight to Clint Hester by decision at UFC 169. Guimaraes will be looking to rebound from his first loss in UFC competition, having lost to Hyun Gyu Lin at UFC On Fuel TV VIII. This is a must win situation for both competitors involved in this one, but it will be Enz getting his first UFC win.

Up next is a bantamweight division attraction as “Brutal” Johnny Bedford (19-10-1-1NC) takes on Cody “The Renegade” Gibson (11-4-0). Bedford has won two of four fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Louis Gaudinot at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale. Gibson is currently winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 170. Gibson is a late replacement for Rani Yahya in this one and that is going to hurt him as Bedford gets his third UFC win.

Headlining this portion of the card is a lightweight division bout as Carlos Diego Ferreira (9-0-0) faces Colton Smith (3-3-0). Ferreira will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is a former Legacy Fighting Championships Lightweight Champion. Smith will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, but he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 16. Smith has fallen on hard times since winning TUF and his hard times will continue as Ferreira makes a successful UFC debut.
