UFC FIGHT NIGHT 46 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 7/18/2014 12:47 PM

For the third straight week, the UFC will be putting on a pair of shows in the same one week period, with UFC Fight Night 46 capping off this weeks offering. This particular event will be headlined by a featherweight division bout as Conor McGregor faces Diego Brandao. Also, Gunnar Nelson faces Zak Cummings and a key flyweight division bout will be featured on this card.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division bout as Naoyuki Kotani (33-10-7) competes against “Stormin'” Norman Parke (19-2-1). Kotani will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he will be doing so on the strength of a thirteen fight winning streak. Parke is currently undefeated in UFC competition and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes. Parke is quickly establishing himself as a top contender in the lightweight division and he will rise in the rankings when he defeats Kotani.

A pair of flyweights will collide next as “Uncle Creepy” Ian McCall (12-4-1) battles Brad “One Punch” Pickett (24-8-0). McCall will be looking to build on the momentum of his first UFC win, which came over Iliarde Santos at UFC 163. Pickett has won two of three fights since dropping down to flyweight, most notably defeating Mike Easton at UFC On Fuel TV IX. These are two of the better flyweights in the whole division right now, but it will be Pickett getting the big victory.

Up next is a welterweight division affair as Zak Cummings (17-3-0) takes on Gunnar “Gunni” Nelson (12-0-1). Cummings is currently undefeated under the UFC banner, last defeating Yan Cabral by decision at UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva. Nelson has already competed three times in the UFC and he has been undefeated for over seven years. This is a much bigger welterweight division fight than most people believed going into it, but it will be Nelson staying undefeated in the end.

Headlining this card is a featherweight division bout as “Notorious” Conor McGregor (14-2-0) faces Diego “DB” Brandao (18-9-0). McGregor is currently undefeated in UFC competition, last defeating Max Holloway by decision at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen. Brandao has won three of his last four under the UFC banner and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 14. This is the biggest opportunity that either fighter has had in their careers until this point, but it will be McGregor getting a win in his home country.
