UFC FIGHT NIGHT 47 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 8/14/2014 8:52 AM

After a few weeks off, the Ultimate Fighting Championships returns to action this weekend with another stellar line up. The event is going to be headlined by a light heavyweight division bout pitting Ryan Bader against Ovince St. Preux. There are four fights on the preliminary card, with Jussier Formiga battling Zach Makovsky in the featured spot.

Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division affair as Frankie Saenz (8-2-0) competes against Nolan Ticman (4-1-0). Saenz will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he will be doing so on a four fight winning streak. Ticman will also be making his UFC debut in this fight and he has only seen one career fight go to a decision. This is a huge opportunity for both fighters to make their UFC debuts on national TV, but it will be the more experienced Saenz getting the win.

A pair of middleweights will clash next as “Smilin'” Sam Alvey (23-5-0-1NC) battles Tom “Kong” Watson (16-7-0). Alvey will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is a former Maximum Fighting Championships Middleweight Champion. Watson has only won just one of four fights under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Stanislav Nedkov at UFC On Fuel TV VII. Alvey should have been in the UFC a long time ago and he will show why when he hands Watson another loss in the UFC.

Up next is a women's bantamweight division bout as Sara McMann (7-1-0) takes on Lauren Murphy (8-0-0). McMann will be competing for the first time since losing to UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey at UFC 170. Murphy will be making her UFC debut in this bout and she was the Invicta FC Women's Bantamweight Champion. This fight should put the winner near title contention and it will be McMann using her wrestling to hand Murphy her first defeat.

Headlining this portion of the card is a flyweight division bout as Jussier Formiga (16-3-0) faces Zach “Fun Size” Makovsky (18-4-0). Formiga has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC run, with his last fight being a win over Scott Jorgensen at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson II. Makovsky is currently undefeated under the UFC banner, last defeating Josh Sampo by decision at UFC 170. Makovsky has become an instant threat in the flyweight division since coming to the UFC and he will get closer to a title shot when he defeats Formiga.
