UFC 177 FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 8/28/2014 10:43 PM

Concluding what has been another excellent summer full of MMA action will be the stellar UFC 177 card. The events will be headlined by a rematch for the UFC Bantamweight Title as TJ Dillashaw defends against Renan Barao. There will be four fights on the Fox Sports 1 portion of the preliminary card, which includes an Olympic gold medalist in action.

Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division fight as Anthony Birchak (11-1-0) competes against Joe “One Bad Mofo” Soto (15-2-0). Birchak will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he does hold a win over current UFC fighter Ryan Benoit. Soto will also be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is the current Tachi Palace Fights Bantamweight Champion. Soto has been making some noise in recent months to get a UFC deal and he will reward his efforts by winning in his UFC debut.

A pair of heavyweights will collide next as Anthony “Freight Train” Hamilton (12-3-0) battles Ruan “Fangzz” Potts (8-2-0). Hamilton is currently winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to Alexey Oleinik at UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Stephens. Potts also finds himself winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to Soa Palelei at UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva. This is a must win situation for both competitors involved in this one, but it will be Hamilton getting the much needed win.

Up next is a flyweight division attraction as Henry Cejudo (6-0-0) takes on Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen (15-9-0). Cejudo will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he did win an Olympic gold medal as an amateur wrestler. Jorgensen will be looking to build on the momentum of his first win as a flyweight, which came over Danny Martinez at UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Khabilov. Cejudo definitely has a bright future in MMA, but he does not have the skills to defeat Jorgensen and that will be shown as Jorgensen gets the win.

Headlining this portion of the card is a middleweight division affair as Derek Brunson (11-3-0) faces Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (14-3-0-1NC). Brunson has won two of three fights during his UFC run, most notably defeating Chris Leben at UFC 155. Larkin will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, dropped fights to Brad Tavares and Costas Philippou. These are two of the better prospects in the middleweight division right now, but it will be Brunson getting back on track with a win.
