BELLATOR 123 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/2/2014 5:38 PM

Going head to head with the UFC on Friday Night is no easy task, but that is something that Bellator MMA is doing this weekend. The event is called Bellator 123 and it will be headlined by a rematch for the Bellator Featherweight Title as Pat Curran again defends against Patricio Freire. Also, TNA Champion Bobby Lashley makes his Bellator MMA debut and King Mo steps back into the cage.

Kicking off the action is a heavyweight division bout as Josh Burns (8-7-0) competes against Bobby “The Dominator” Lashley (10-2-0). Burns is winless in all four of his previous Bellator MMA appearances and he is returning to action after a ten month layoff. Lashley is the current TNA Wrestling World Champion (Pro Wrestling) and Xtreme Fight Night (MMA) Heavyweight Champion, he will be making his Bellator MMA debut in this fight. This is easily the highest profile fight of Lashley's career and he will easily defeat the vastly over matched Burns to get the win.

More heavyweight division action is happening next as Cheick Kongo (21-9-2) battles Lavar “Big” Johnson (18-9-0). Kongo is a UFC veteran who made it to the finals of the season ten heavyweight tournament, losing to Vitaly Minakov in the finals. Johnson is also a UFC veteran who has only won just one of three in Bellator MMA, with that lone win coming over Ryan Martinez at Bellator 111. This is both fighters biggest chance to start one more run towards heavyweight glory and it will be Kongo getting the win in this slugfest.

Up next is a light heavyweight division attraction as Dustin Jacoby (10-3-0) takes on Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (12-4-0-1NC). Jacoby is a late replacement competitor in this fight, but he has won four of his last five bouts entering this fight. Mo is returning to action after a controversial decision loss to Quinton Jackson in the main event Bellator 120, the promotions inaugural pay-per-view. Jacoby definitely has the skills to pull the upset, but it will be King Mo using his wrestling base to secure a victory.

Headlining this card is a bout for the Bellator Featherweight Title as champion Pat “Paddy Mike” Curran (20-5-0) defends against Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (21-2-0). Curran won the initial meeting between the two at Bellator 85, holding onto his belt via a split decision. Freire earned another opportunity at the gold after winning the season nine featherweight tournament, defeating Justin Wilcox in the finals. The first fight between these two was one of the best fights of 2013 and it will be Freire getting the win and the gold this time around.
