River City Wrestling to host memorial & tribute show in honor of "Aqua Man" Jonathan Vela
River City Wrestling - San Antonio's brand of professional wrestling - will be honoring the late, great "Aqua Man" Jonathan Vela on Friday, September 12, 2014 at Sideliners Grill, 15630 Henderson Pass. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the event begins at 8 p.m.
In addition to being a pillar in the community in regards to charitable and comic con appearances, Vela was also the ring announcer for RCW. Vela was a true "super hero" in every sense of the word; his warm smile reflected his positive, gentle spirit and he consistently assisted others ahead of his own needs.
Admission to the event is $12 (cash/credit) with pre-sale tickets available at RCW's website or at ticketmaster.com.
RCW will be doing a few things in honor of Vela. First, many members of his family will be in attendance including his brother Jeff—who will be taking over ring announcing duties—and Jeff's daughters Melissa and Ashley. Second, all wrestlers, staff and fans are invited to come in costume as their favorite superhero/villain, TV/film/comic , wrestler, sci-fi or anime character. In addition, RCW will conduct "FANdemonium auctions" in which the winning bidder gets to make the match of his/her choice. There will also be silent auctions held with items donated from various businesses and individuals. All funds from both of these auctions will be donated to the Vela family.
Keeping in the generous spirit of Vela, RCW will also assist two other charities. Following the event, all wrestlers, staff and fans are invited to take part in a massive ALS ice bucket challenge in the parking lot. Dr. Albert Valadez, a professor at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, along with his children will be special guests of honor. Dr. Valadez' spouse was diagnosed with ALS. RCW will be collecting donations that will be given to the ALS Association Texas Chapter.
In addition, there will be a bake sale for the Alzheimer's Association.
Wrestling fans will see at least five exciting matches with stars including Tag Team Champions "Super-Mex" Hernandez & Joey "Super Shot" Spector, International Champion Darin Childs, Masada, "The Samoan Beast" Michael Faith, Chris Marval and more!
