BELLATOR 124 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/8/2014 10:39 PM

Bellator MMA is coming off of a hugely successful event last week and now Bellator 124 is looking to keep the momentum going. This weeks event is going to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight as Emanuel Newton defends the gold against UFC veteran Joey Beltran. Also, the “2014 Summer Series” Light Heavyweight Tournament Finals will take place and Ryan Couture makes his promotional debut.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division fight as Ryan Couture (8-3-0) competes against John “The Machine” Schulz (5-2-0). Couture has been undefeated since his UFC release, which came after a loss to Al Iaquinta at UFC 164. Schulz has only won just one of his last three bouts, with that lone win coming over Anthony Smith at Triple X Cagefighting II. Couture has had problems with fighters he was “supposed to beat” in the past, but that will not be a problem here as he makes a successful Bellator MMA debut.

A pair of bantamweights will collide next as LC Davis (21-6-0) battles Zeilton “Nenzao” Rodrigues (12-3-0). Davis is currently undefeated in Bellator MMA competition, having defeated Taurean Bogguess at Bellator 113. Rodrigues will make his Bellator MMA debut on a six fight winning streak and he holds a win over current WSOF bantamweight Champion Marlon Moraes. Rodrigues is one of those fighters that only hardcore MMA fans heard of, but he will get a lot more attention when he gets the win over Davis.

Up next is the “2014 Summer Series” Light Heavyweight Tournament Finals as Kelly “Crossface” Anundson (9-2-0) takes on Liam McGeary (8-0-0). Anundson was able to make it to the finals after earning victories over Rodney Wallace and Philipe Lins. McGeary punched his ticket to the tournament finals with a pair of wins over both Mike Mucitelli and Egidijus Valavicius. McGeary has a ton of potential and he will steamroll past Anundson to win the tournament and get a title shot.

Headlining this card is a Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight Title Fight as champion “The Hardcore Kid” Emanuel Newton (23-7-1) defends against Joey “Mexicutioner” Beltran (15-10-0-1NC). Newton will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Attila Vegh at Bellator 113. Beltran is a UFC veteran who has only won two of his last eight fights, but one of those wins did come over fellow UFC veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. Beltran may be the least deserving top contender in all of MMA and Newton will handily defeat him to keep the gold.
