UFC FIGHT NIGHT 53 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 10/1/2014 10:09 PM

Kicking off another double shot Saturday of UFC action will be a stellar UFC Fight Night 53 card from Stockholm, Sweden. The event will be headlined by a key welterweight division attraction as Gunnar Nelson battles Rick Story. Also, Akira Corassani faces Max Holloway in a key featherweight bout and Ilir Latifi looks for a home country win.

Kicking off the action is a featherweight division attraction as Niklas Backstrom (8-0-0-1NC) competes against Mike “The Warrior” Wilkinson (8-1-0). Backstrom has already competed once in UFC competition, having defeated Tom Niinimaki at UFC Fight Night: Munoz vs. Mousasi. Wilkinson will be looking to rebound from his first UFC defeat, which came to Rony Jason at UFC On Fuel TV X. Wilkinson is returning to action after a long layoff and that is going to hurt him as Backstrom gets the win.

A pair of light heavyweights will collide next as Jan Blachowicz (17-3-0) battles Ilir “The Sledge Hammer” Latifi (9-3-0-1NC). Blachowicz will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he has already defeated UFC veterans Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Goran Reljic. Latifi will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, most notably defeated Cyrille Diabate at UFC Fight Night: Gustafsson vs. Manuwa. Blachowicz should have been in the UFC a long time ago and he will shine in his promotional debut as he defeats Latifi.

Up next is a featherweight division attraction as Akira Corassani (12-4-0-1NC) battles Max “Blessed” Holloway (10-3-0). Corassani has won three of his last four under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Maximo Blanco at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. Holloway will enter the bout riding a three fight winning streak, last defeating Clay Collard at UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Dos Anjos. Holloway is quickly becoming a top contender in the featherweight division and he will take a step up the rankings after defeating Corassani.

Headlining this card is welterweight division bout as Gunnar “Gunni” Nelson (13-0-1) faces Rick “The Horror” Story (17-8-0). Nelson has already fought four times under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Zak Cummings at UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Brandao. Story has rotated wins and losses in his last eight UFC fights, with his last fight being a win over Leonardo Teixeira at UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Miller. Nelson is one of the best welterweights in the UFC right now and he will defeat the longtime UFC veteran in this one.
