RESURRECTION FIGHTING ALLIANCE 20 MAIN CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 11/5/2014 9:37 PM

There are three days’ worth of MMA action coming upon us this weekend and midway through the events will be Resurrection Fighting Alliance 20. The event will be headlined by a bout for the vacant RFA Bantamweight Title as Luke Sanders faces Jarred Mercado. Also, UFC veterans Alvin Robinson and Gilbert Smith competes, plus there are two big welterweight division bouts on the card as well.

Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division bout as Boston “Boom Boom” Salmon (2-0-0) competes against James DeHerrera (1-0-0). Salmon has spent his entire career in the RFA promotion and none of his fights have gone past the opening round. DeHerrera made his professional MMA debut earlier this summer at Jackson’s MMA Series 13, defeating David Vigil by submission. Salmon has been one of the better surprises in the RFA this year and his undefeated run will continue when he defeats DeHerrera.

A pair of light heavyweights will clash next as Cody Mumma (5-2-0) does battle against Colton Vaughn (6-4-0). Mumma will be making his RFA debut in this fight and he has yet to see any of his fights go to the judge’s scorecards. Vaughn will also be making his RFA debut in this fight and he has previously fought WSOF veteran Jake Heun. These are two light heavyweights who are known for their finishing abilities, but it will ne Mumma making a successful RFA debut.

The featherweight division will be featured next as Alvin “Kid” Robinson (13-8-0) is in action against Fabio “Jungle Boy” Serrao (6-4-0). Robinson is a UFC veteran who has won four of eight since his UFC release, which came after a loss to Mark Bocek at UFC 91. Serrao has won two of his last three heading into his RFA debut and he has fought Strikeforce veteran Tyler Toner. Robinson is far from the competitor he was in the UFC, but he has enough skills to defeat Serrao in this one.

Our first welterweight division bout is next as Bojan “Veli” Velickovic (9-2-0) battles Gilbert Smith (9-3-0). Velickovic will be making his RFA debut in this fight and he has previously fought UFC veteran Krzysztof Jotko. Smith is a UFC veteran who has won four of five since his UFC release, last defeating Ben Brewer at Legacy FC 34. The winner of this bout could easily be in line for a welterweight title opportunity and it will be Smith getting that opportunity as he picks up the win.

Up next is a welterweight division attraction as Benjamin Smith (9-2-0) will be taking on Josh Cavan (9-4-0). Smith will be returning to RFA competition after a year absence, having won four straight fights in between appearances. Cavan is currently winless in RFA competition, having dropped a fight to Chris Heatherly by submission at RFA 16. These are another pair of competitors who could get into title contention with a win, which is what Smith will be getting here.

Headlining this card is a bout for the vacant RFA Bantamweight Title as Luke “Cool Hand” Sanders (8-0-0) faces Jarred “Shutout” Sanders (12-1-0). Sanders has already won two bouts under the RFA banner, last defeating Darrick Minner by TKO at RFA 17. Mercado is also undefeated in RFA competition, having defeated Daniel Swain by unanimous decision at RFA 16. These are two competitors who are worthy of being champion, but it will be Sanders leaving with the gold in the end.
