ONE CURRENT/TWO FORMER UFC FIGHTERS FILE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST PROMOTION

By David Tees on 12/16/2014 7:50 PM

Current UFC fighter Cung Le and two former UFC fighters (Jon Fitch & Nate Quarry) have teamed with a group of attorney’s to file a class action lawsuit against the UFC. Although only three fighters were named at this point, more fighters who are involved in the suit could be named, depending on how the suit progresses. The suit is essentially an anti-trust lawsuit, stating that the UFC has a monopoly over the marketplace and that monopoly makes it unfair for fighters to earn a fair living.

The rest of the lawsuit states that the UFC used their monopoly to sign fighters to long term exclusive contracts which use other exclusionary clauses, controlled fighters by leveraging title bouts, extorting the likeness of UFC fighters with minimal financial gain to the fighters, driven other MMA promotions out of business to further control the MMA business as a whole, refusal to co-promote events with other promoters, forced venues to sign exclusivity contracts with the UFC and publicly touted their success to stifle other promotions.

The UFC did issues a statement in response to the lawsuit and it says…

“The UFC is aware of the action filed today but has not been served, nor has it had the opportunity to review the document… the UFC will vigorously defend itself and its business practices.”
