WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 17 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 1/16/2015 9:17 AM

The first World Series Of Fighting event for 2015 is upon us this Saturday Night and it features a big time main event as Jake Shields faces Brian Foster, with the winner getting a welterweight title fight. The co-main event is a lightweight division bout as Brian Cobb looks for a big victory as he fights Jonathan Nunez. Also, Bryson Hansen looks to get another victory in the WSOF as he battles Rudy Morales and TUF alumni Adam Cella is in action.

Main Card

Main Event

WSOF Welterweight Division Fight

Jake Shields (30-7-1-1NC) vs. Brian Foster (22-6-0)

Shields is a UFC veteran who made his WSOF debut in October 2014, defeating WSOF Canada Welterweight Champion Ryan Ford in a non-title bout. Foster will be making his WSOF debut in this fight, but he has won six of seven fights since voluntarily leaving the UFC in 2010. If Shields were to win the fight, it would be the first time he has been in a title fight since a loss to then UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129 in April 2011. Foster has only seen one of his professional MMA bouts go to a decision and his last win came over TUF alumni Gilbert Smith at Titan FC 28. Shields is well known for his suffocating ground control and he will go back to what he knows in that ground game to grind a decision win over Foster.

Co-Main Event

WSOF Lightweight Division Fight

Brian “The Bandit” Cobb (20-8-0) vs. Jonathan “Johnny Boy” Nunez (5-0-0)

Cobb will be returning to action after an eighteen month absence, with his last fight being a loss to WSOF Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje at the WSOF III. Nunez made his promotional debut at the WSOF IX in March 2014, defeating Ozzy Dugulubgov by decision. Cobb has won five of his last seven fights, with two of those wins coming over UFC veterans Drew Fickett and Ronys Torres. Nunez has rotated fights ending in the first and third rounds, with his last fight ending in a third round decision. Both fighters have been inactive in the last year-plus, but Cobb has a huge experience advantage and he will out strike Nunez to get a decision.

WSOF Middleweight Division Fight

Brendan Kornberger (5-0-0) vs. Krasimir “The Wrestler” Mladenov (11-0-0)

Kornberger will be returning to the WSOF after a one year absence, with his last appearance being a win over Micah Brakerfield at the WSOF VII. Mladenov has already competed twice under the WSOF banner, having defeated both Kendrick Miree and Angel DeAnda. Mladenov’s nickname is as appropriate as it can get for a fighter as he will outwrestle Kornberger to earn a decision.

WSOF Featherweight Division Fight

Bryson Hansen (7-2-0) vs. “Ruthless” Rudy Morales (3-1-0)

Hansen will be looking to rebound from his first loss under the WSOF banner, having dropped a fight to Matt Sayles at the WSOF 12. Morales will be making his WSOF debut on a three fight winning streak, which includes a win over Jimmy Jones at Bellator 115. Hansen is one of the brighter prospects in the WSOF at the moment and he will get a win over Morales by using his ground game.

WSOF Middleweight Division Fight

Adam Cella (6-2-0) vs. Danny “Dee1” Davis Jr. (10-8-1)

Cella will be making his WSOF debut in this fight, but he is known by most MMA fans as the fighter on the receiving end of the brutal spinning head kick from Uriah Hall on TUF 17. Davis Jr. is actually coming off of the biggest win of his MMA career, as he defeated UFC veteran Jorge Lopez at the WSOF 12. Davis Jr. has seen a career resurrection as of late, but Cella is a fighter known for finishing fights and he will TKO Davis Jr. in the first.

Preliminary Card

Sinjen Smith over Gil Guardado

Jimmy Spicuzza over Joe Condon

Jordan Rinaldi over Soslan Abanokov

Taylor McCorriston over Donovan Frelow

Trey Williams over Jamie Point
