UFC FIGHT NIGHT 74 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 8/23/2015 1:56 PM

A rare Sunday Night event from the UFC is upon us as the worlds biggest MMA promotion presents UFC Fight Night 74. The event will be headlined by a key featherweight division attraction as Max Holloway faces Charles Oliveira. Also, Erick Silva faces Neil Magny in the co-main event, while there is also a key fight in the UFC Women’s Strawweight Division.

Main Card

Main Event

UFC Featherweight Division Fight

Max “Blessed” Holloway (13-3-0) vs. Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira (20-4-0-1NC)

Holloway will enter his first main event on a six fight winning streak, last defeating Cub Swanson at UFC On Fox 15. Oliveira will also be entering his first UFC main event in this bout and he does so on a four fight winning streak. Holloway is on an aforementioned six fight winning streak, with five of those six wins coming by way of submission or TKO. Oliveira achieved a huge accomplishment during his winning streak, as he was the first fighter to ever finish Hatsu Hioki. This may be a fight of the year when it is all said and done, but Holloway’s smarter approach to fighting and his use of range will keep Oliveira stumbling until a late TKO is the road to Holloway’s victory.

Co-Main Event

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Neil Magny (15-4-0) vs. Erick “The Tiger” Silva (18-5-0-1NC)

Magny will be looking to rebound from his first loss in eight fights, which came to Damien Maia at UFC 190. Silva will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, most notably defeating Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare. During his now finished seven fight winning streak, Magny defeated top names like Tim Means and William Macario. Silva is currently on the first winning streak of his UFC run, a run that has not lasted four years. Silva is a fighter who is far better than his UFC record suggest, but his usual recklessness will cost him as the more measured Magny counters Silva’s attacks to get a decision win.

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

“The Peoples Warrior” Josh Burkman (27-11-0-1NC) vs. Patrick “The Predator” Cote (21-9-0)

Burkman is currently winless in his second UFC run, dropping fights to both Hector Lombard and Dong Hyun Kim. Cote has won four of his last five under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Joe Riggs at UFC 186. Burkman has badly dropped the ball since returning to the UFC and while Cote is no world beater in his own right, he does have the striking skills to keep Burkman on his heels on route to a decision win.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Chad “The Disciple” Laprise (10-0-0) vs. Francisco “Massaranduba” Trinaldo (17-4-0)

Laprise has won all three of his previous bouts under the UFC banner and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter Nations. Trinaldo is entering the fight on a three fight winning streak, last defeating Norman Parke at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Alves. Trinaldo’s best bet to get the win will be to get the fight to the ground, but Laprise has the striking skills to avoid Trinaldo’s ground game and that will get Laprise a decision win.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Olivier “The Quebec Kid” Aubin-Mercier (6-1-0) vs. Tony “2.0” Sims (12-2-0)

Aubin-Mercier has won two of three fights under the UFC banner and he was a runner up on the UFC Ultimate Fighter Nations. Sims is currently undefeated under the UFC banner, having defeated Steve Montgomery at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Romero. Aubin-Mercier has one of the best ground games in the lightweight division right now, he will eventually ground and submit Sims in the first round.

UFC Women’s Strawweight Division Fight

Valerie “Trouble” Letourneau (7-3-0) vs. Maryna “The Iron Woman” Moroz (6-0-0)

Letourneau is currently undefeated in UFC competition, last defeating TUF alumni Jessica Rakoczy at UFC 186. Moroz pulled a stunning upset in her UFC debut, defeating Joanne Calderwood as a late replacement at UFC Fight Night: Gonzaga vs. Cro Cop II. Moroz’s style is just to charge forward and overwhelm her opponents with offense, which will cause lots of problems for Letourneau on route to a TKO finish.
