WRESTLING AT THE LANDMARK ARENA

NCW & ANARCHY

National Championship Wrestling Ground Zero Review

From Larry Goodman:

“Ground Zero” was the first attempt at a major event stemming from the revival of weekly Friday night shows at Landmark Arena in Cornelia. At five buck a pop, NCW is clearly giving fans more than their money’s worth.

There was a lot to like about Ground Zero. The main event (Andrew Duckworth vs. Austin Theory vs. Jagged Edge), Billy Buck vs. Jeremy Foster, A. C. Mack vs. Matt Gilbert come to mind. Appearances by Bambi and Tommy Rich added a touch of nostalgia.

It was also very rough in spots due to the inexperienced nature of their crew. NCW’s primary objective is to serve as a training ground for young talent and gives them a chance to work in a television environment.

Nigel Sherrod is doing a fine job with the daunting task of booking a weekly show.

NCW was kind enough to provide a video file of the show. It was raw footage so I can't speak to production values of the final product.

The announce team of John Johnson and Triston Michaels opened with the traditional Wildside/Anarchy backstage stand up. They had some awkward moments early on but seemed to get more comfortable as as the show progressed. Triston doubled as ring announcer.

Original NCW co-owner Steve Martin made a surprise appearance during the opening. I marked out huge for this.

(1) The Barefoot Badboy” Matt Gilbert submitted NCW Junior Champion A.C. Mack at 6:20 in a no time-limit non-title submission match. Mack tapped to an ankle lock. The story was Gilbert schooling Mack with submissions and technical wrestling. Gilbert molested referee Darryl Hall about not awarding him the belt, like he didn’t know the stipulation? I thoroughly enjoy Mack’s heel act. Gilbert looked the part.

Promo from Schaff talking about his devastating debut in which he destroyed Gilbert and put Logan Creed to sleep. Schaff vowed to put Creed to sleep and take his spot as the big man in NCW (in a match at last night's show). I was not a buyer.

(2) Kenji Brea & Bolo defeated Terry Lawler & David Ali in 8:55. Triston dropped the knowledge that Brea and Bolo helped Duckworth win the NCW Heavyweight Championship. Brea is the artist formerly known as Ken Lee. He looked good here. Bolo speared Ali behind the ref’s back leaving him a sitting duck for Brea’s cover. The spear was more like a mini-spinebuster. Thank God for Terry Lawler on the finish because referee David Weakley looked totally clueless.

The promo video for the NWA Wildside Reunion show on September 9 was one of my favorite things about this. How could it not be? 40, count ‘em, 40 superstars advertised. The cast of characters was unforgettable. In this short video alone you had Air Paris, David Young, Rick Michaels, Onyx, Lazz, Shank, Rock ‘N Roll Express, James Mitchell, Stone Mountain, Scottie Wrenn, White Trash and more.

Chris McCulley vs. Chris Nelms never happened.

Thank God.

“The Self-Proclaimed Chosen One” Chris Nelms (with retro Rick Michaels headband) came out to Johnny Cash theme music. Nelms said he didn’t work for NCW and if people wanted to see him wrestle in Cornelia they needed to come up the road to a better show (OSWA). He was outta there.

McCulley’s music hit and he acted like he had won a monumental victory. Any babyface worth their salt would have been furious.

(3)Katie Ohno defeated Harlow O’Hara with former NWA Women’s Champion Bambi as the special referee in 6:15. Ohno got the pin with double knees off the top. After administering a beating, the XXL O’Hara bumped for Ohno’s clothesline. O’Hara got bitchy about Bambi’s officiating and shoved her. Bambi gave O’Hara a stunner, making her a sitting duck for Ohno. I see something good in Harlow, although my sense was this was not one of her better matches.

Mr. Skins and Hoax came to ringside. Skins said Hoax wanted a special meet and greet with Bambi. Hoax tried to give Bambi a bouquet of flowers. Bambi wouldn’t take them. Hoax puckered up, closed his eyes and said how about a little sugar? Bambi laid Hoax out with a stunner and the flowers went flying. It was a brutal segment. Skins made my flesh crawl.

(4)Billy Buck defeated Jeremy Foster in 6:14 in a no time-limit rematch to advance to the Anarchy Heritage Tournament final. JJ pointed out that Buck cut his teeth on the NWA Wildside Friday night shows. Buck used Rave’s STO on the apron to take over. On the comeback, Foster was doing these crazy Honma headbutts. Foster got a close near fall with a flying bodypress but tweaked his knee in the process. Buck went for the superkick. Foster sidestepped and got an ankle lock. Buck made the ropes after a mighty struggle. Foster was chomping at the bit to hit his finisher and ran right into a wicked superkick, taking it flush on the jaw. Match was a cut above the rest of the show.

Buck faces “The Nightmare” Kyle Matthews to determine the champion at tonight’s Anarchy event.

(5)Tommy Rich & NCW Tag Team Champions Good Ole Boys (Cuzin Cletus & Cuzin Shaggy) defeated the 13th Floor (Trevor Aeon & Chris Bullet & Ike Cross) in 11:52. They did the deal where Shaggy crawled through Rich’s legs to pop Cross in the face. Rich foiled 13th Floor when they tried to play copy cat. Shaggy took the heat. Rich cleaned house in slow motion. Finish was a three-way collision amongst 13th Floor and Rich rolled Aeon up. The finish looked really bad. Rich did more than I expected he would. I wished he had done less. Aeon is way ahead of his partners who are painfully green.

(6)Andrew Duckworth retained the NCW Heavyweight Championship over Jagged Edge and Austin Theory in 9:56. They did a good job of navigating the inherent difficulties of a three-way match. Theory’s EVOLVE/Flo Slam exploits have been well documented. It’s no accident that Duckworth was included on Scott Hensley’s 17 to Watch in 2017 list. He’s a natural heel and his skills put him at the top of the class on the roster. Jagged was channeling JYD using “Another One Bites The Dust” for theme music and appeared to have the match won after hitting the Big Thump on Duckworth. Bolo interfered to break up the pin. Referee Hall called for the bell. Triston reminded the crowd that there were no DQs in a triple threat. Jagged battled to the back with Bolo. Theory pinned Duckworth with a TKO but Brea put Duckworth’s foot on the rope prompting a restart. Duckworth immediately low-blowed Theory and rolled him up.

Postmatch, Duckworth celebrated with Brea and Bolo on the ramp, while Jagged raised Theory’s hand in the ring. Duckworth & Brea vs. Jagged & Theory was the last night's main event.

Anarchy Wrestling Report from Cornelia on June 10

From Larry Goodman:

Anarchy Wrestling put the finishing touches on Hostile Environment 2017, which sets up to be a great show on June 24.

In the other key piece of business, “Nightmare” Kyle Matthews became the first Landmark Arena Heritage Champion by defeating Billy Buck in an outstanding match. The match and choice of champion certainly got the new title off on the right foot.

Burning questions Hostile Environment about were still on the table heading into last night. Who were the yet to be named members of Gladiator Jeremiah’s War Games team? Which team would have the man advantage in the War Games? Would Dany Only be barred from ringside for the Anarchy Triple Crown title match between his partner and former champion Stryknyn and reigning champion Jacob Ashworth?

The answers made for interesting night of storytelling from booker Dan Wilson, and the Anarchy crew came through with gh with some great promo work to drive home the points.

Attendance at the Landmark Arena was a vocal group of 75. I wouldn’t read anything through to attendance at Hostile Environment from that lowly number. The groundwork that sells tickets has already been laid. War Games is always a draw in Cornelia. If anything, the attendance suggests six shows per month is oversaturating Landmark with wrestling.

This was my first visit to the Arena since Hardcore Hell and the improvements to the building just keep on coming. The video production is now a five camera shoot. They’ve beefed up the lighting for the ring. There’s finally an actual ticket window. The overall appearance has been spiffed up.

In all of its18 years as a wrestling venue, the infrastructure, both physical plant and support staff, has never been as robust.

Wilson announced Tank vs. CZW’s Matt Tremont for July 22 and the return of John Johnson to join Wilson in the announcer’s booth.

(1) Jeremy Foster & AJ Gray defeated Ryan Vega & Lenny Stratton in 9:38. Crowd was into Foster and Gray. A lightning quick ankle lock had Vega scrambling for the ropes and his newfound headbutt attack was in full effect. Gray popped the crowd with a leapfrog dropkick sequence. The heels got heat on Foster. Vega spit at Gray, who lost his cool and a golden opportunity for a tag. Stratton came off the ropes landing gonads first on Foster’s knees. Tags made and things got squirrely. Gray and Vega went at it on the outside until Gray chased Vega to the back brandishing an ink pen (threatening payback for Vega stabbing him in the eye with a pen). Foster pinned Stratton with a flying knee strike.

We got a live shot on the video screen of a grumpy Adrian Hawkins entering the building. Hawkins blew off the losers of the opening match and headed to the ring where he taped his fists and pounded the crap out of poor Ryan Rembrandt.

Hawkins confronted Wilson at the announcer’s desk. “It’s their (Lynch Mob’s) blood on your hands.” Hawkins said Rave Approved would walk out of Hostile Environment as the new tag team champions. Rave Approved faces Lynch Mob for the titles in a taped first match at Hostile Environment.

Gladiator Jeremiah revealed the other members of his team for the War Games (along with Se7en) as Cyrus the Destroyer and Iceberg. Cyrus was there in the flesh to take on Team TAG. Iceberg was introduced via video to a monster pop.

(2) Cyrus the Destroyer destroyed Team TAG (Kevin Blue & Chris Spectra) in 14 seconds. A stunned Team TAG never knew what hit them. Cyrus took Spectra out with a flying boot and pinned Blue with the black hole slam.

(3) “The Nightmare” Kyle Matthews defeated Billy Buck via submission to become the inaugural Landmark Arena Heritage Champion in 15:16. Buck was greeted with a "Brokeback Billy" chant. Matthews busted out a bow and arrow early. Buck threw one terrific dropkick. Buck took over witha classic Eddie Gilbert hotshot. A sweet series of reversals was capped off by Buck faking a clothesline and dropping Matthews with a DDT. They traded hellacious chops. Matthews' tope was the one and only dive off the night.  Another steallar sequence of reversals led to backcracker by Matthews. Buck used a Blue Thunder Bomb and set up for the superkick. Matthews blocked. Buck with the double AA spinebuster for a near fall. Buck went up top and got nutted on the turnbuckle. That landing did not look like fun. With Buck still perched on the top, Matthew hit a dropkick and brought him down with a huracanrana. Nobody home for Matthews' frogsplash. Buck locked in the figure four. Matthews made the ropes. Matthews blocked another superkick, nailed Buck with the Slurpee Kick (corner dropkick) and applied the Octopus. MY thought was this was just what the first title match needed to be.

Postmatch standing O for Matthews.

The second half opened with a live backstage shot of Jeff G. Bailey rallying his troops (Miller and Team TAG) for the War Games. The audio was fouled up but Bailey’s body language was crystal clear. He was livid about Team TAG’s showing earlier in the evening and lectured Miller to fire him up. Miller took charge of the huddle.

(4) Rock-C defeated Nicole Pain (with Crystal Rose) via submission in 6:38 to retain the Anarchy Women’s Championship. A lot Ruby Riot influence in Pain’s character and a boatload of arrogance to boot. Rock-C’s offense looked sharp. When Pain grabbed a headlock, Rock-C deadlifted her into a back suplex. Rock-C was hampered by a legit knee injury suffered during the match. Rock-C made the comeback after Pain missed a splash off the top. Crystal grabbed Rock-C’s leg to momentarily stall her momentum. Pain put on the brakes to avoid kicking Crystal. Rock-C capitalized on the snafu and submitted Pain with an inverted cloverleaf.

Crystal was not thrilled with Pain’s performance and laid her out with a snapmare driver. Pain got up way too soon.

Stryknyn was introduced as guest color commentator for Ashworth’s match with Only.

Ashworth instead got a video promo from Only at the beach. Only admitted using his helmet to help Stryknyn win the number one contender’s match last time. He did what he needed to do to win. He said Hate Junkies and Ashworth were Anarchy family and he had Ashworth’s back all the way to the title. Only said he decided to take a vacation and accept being barred from ringside at Hostile Environment. “I’m giving you the day off. You’ll need it.”

Torque came out to seize the moment and challenge Ashworth to a title match. He got an Oompa Loompa chant from the crowd. Ashworth said the competition came up a little short (haha) but since Torque was man enough to ask for it, he would grant him the match.

(5) Jacob Ashworth defeated Torque in 7:48 to retain the Anarchy Triple Crown Championship.Good match. Torque showed lots of personality. He couldn’t cope with Ashworth’s power and skill until the cut off –a throat snap across the top rope. Ashworth gave Torque plenty of offense but there was no way the crowd was buying the idea Torque would win. Torque tried to fly. Ashworth cradled him like a small child and hit a fallaway slam followed by a reverse splash. Torque came back with a swinging neckbreaker and went up top for the 450, landing brutally across Ashworth’s knee. Ashworth finished him off with the roll of the dice.

Stryknyn and Wilson joined Ashworth in the ring. Wilson talked about the odd couple friendship that Stryk and Ashworth had formed. He did not want to see that friendship deteriorate but every man that laces up the boots wants the title.

Ashworth said he was glad he would be facing Stryknyn without Only at ringside, but it didn’t matter who was outside the ring because he was inside and Stryk would have to deal with him. Ashworth said he had been through hell and torture for 12 years and he was going to do what it took to stay on top of Anarchy.

Stryk said he had the utmost respect for Ashworth, then questioned what lengths Ashworth was willing to go to to keep the title because he knew what he was willing to do to take it.

“Truth is country boy; I don’t think you have the mean streak in you."

Ashworth said he had to develop a mean streak to deal with Nemesis. He sent him packing and he would show that mean streak to Stryknyn.

“I respect you and you’re my brother but this is for the championship.”

Champion and challenger went nose-to-nose with Wilson trying in vain to separate them. They shook but it was one heated handshake. This was a great final build up. The tension was palpable. It was on the razor’s edge of getting physical without going there.

Next up were video promos from Tank and Brad Cash for their Taipei Death match at Hostile Environment. The video of Tanks’ promo showed only his fist. Tank said he was the hardest hitting SOB in wrestling, naming Ian Rotten, Bull Pain, Necro Butcher and Samoa Joe among the victims he had dropped. Tank said he was going tape that fist, dip it in glue and glass, and punch Cash in the face until he was unrecognizable.

“I hope Anarchy pays for the ambulance so you don’t have to bum a ride.”

Cut to Cash punching the outside wall of the Landmark Arena. Cash said he and Tank had been doing this for years and it would all come to an end on June 24. He didn’t care about Matt Tremont or Tank’s impending retirement. Cash said he didn’t get the reputation and the scars from being scared. He was going to make Tank’s trip to retirement a little bit shorter.

“This is about you and me and shredding each other’s faces.”

Wilson ran down the entire card, which also has the Ryan Vega/AJ Gray grudge match, Matthews making his first title defense against Anthony Henry (with Amber Young,  Rock-C defending against Crystal’s next handpicked opponent, Jessica Leigh and Jeremy Foster vs. Chase Jordan.

(6) “The People’s Captain” Gunner Miller (with Jeff G. Bailey) defeated Gladiator Jeremiah in 16:48 to win the man advantage in the War Games. Jeremiah said bring it. Miller was in no hurry. Jeremiah took control, working on Miller’s arm. Jeremiah tweaked his recently injured knee and Miller was all over it. Jeremiah, was agony personified. Jeremiah’s tornado DDT out of the blue left both men down. Jeremiah with a ferocious comeback despite the nagging knee. Jeremiah escaped Miller’s powerslam and hit Screwdriver on the Rocks for a near fall. But Miller slipped away from Jeremiah’s neckbreaker finisher and hit a spinebuster slam. Jeremiah dodged Miller’s first spear attempt but missed off the top and got speared out his boots for a near fall. Miller planted Jeremiah with a major league Rockbottom and Jeremiah kicked out again. Jeremiah used a wheelbarrow flatliner to set up the neckbreaker. Bingo. Bailey jumped on the apron to distract referee Dee Byers while Jeremiah scored a visual three count. Jeremiah confronted Bailey. Bailey begged off, then grabbed Jeremiah’s leg as he turned towards Miller. Miller blasted Jeremiahs with the CTE and it was over. For a first meeting, this was a really good match and I strongly suspect there will more. Jeremiah’s bumps for Miller’s big moves were tremendous.

Gladiator needed help getting to the back and it appeared doubtful he would be 100% for War Games.

Deep Southern Championship Wrestling was created in March of?  2010 and started running shows once a month in Ellijay, Ga. We started out in a place known as Gilmer Golf and games. Our first show drew a crowd of 35 or 40 people. DSCW didn’t get discouraged though we kept giving good quality matches at a fair price and got our crowds up to 150 or more. We had to move to gyms and civic centers to support our fan base, drawing close to 600 on some of our big shows

Deep Southern Championship Wrestling Report from Blue Ridge on June 3

From Scott Hensley:

Deep Southern Championship Wrestling returned to Blue Ridge, Georgia on Saturday night with most of their core squad and a host of new faces and visitors. WWE Hall of Famer Ron Simmons was in the house and couldn't have been nicer. Attendance was around 175.

1) Drew Duckworth w/ Logan Chase III d. Crash Test Dummy by countout in 5:07 to retain the Southern States Championship

The first of many appearances on the night for Chase, who has become a huge thorn in the side of DSCW/GPW lately. Crash was throwing everything he had at Duckworth. Duckworth answered back to the majority of it, showing why he is the champion. Crash was about to springboard in when Chase pulled him down as Duckworth distracted the referee. Crash fell to the outside, where he was counted out. He hit his head on the floor and was bleeding.

Commissioner Darrell Morris called Jason Collins and Cruiserweight Champion Jessica Leigh to the ring. Morris had told Collins he had to reach 210lbs or less to be able to compete against Leigh for the Cruiserweight title. Collins was accompanied by Logan Chase III. Morris put the scale down and reluctantly had to admit that Collins met the 210lbs mark so the main event was set.

2) Cyrus the Destroyer w/ Logan Chase III d. Shane Williams by pinfall in 8:59

This Shane Williams is not the "king" but he's a big ol' country boy who has competed in the North Georgia area for a few years now. He looks like Logan Creed's slightly smaller country cousin. The crowd got behind Williams who traded huge power move after power move with the monster Cyrus until Cyrus caught him with his black hole slam off the ropes to put him away. The crowd showed their appreciation for the newcomer Williams and after a match like this, I can't imagine these guys are done.

3) The Movement (Chip Hazard & Talon Williams) d. The Violent Gentlemen (Ayden Andrews & Scott Morgan) by pinfall to retain the Tag Team Championship in 11:49

Tough spot for the Gentlemen here, as The Movement are fresh off of being fan favorites but have recently turned a new page after months of frustration and dare I say possible jealousy over the crowd reaction for the newly reformed Good Ol Boys. Andrews & Morgan progressively won the crowd over and I'll throw in an opinion here that these guys are good enough to work any show in the Southeast. These teams each showed good cohesive teamwork but the new attitude of the Movement came out when Talon Williams tried to use one of the tag team titles on Andrews and the referee caught him. As the referee took that belt away, Williams grabbed the other one and decked his opponent, pinning him for the win.

Ron Simmons came to the ring and talked about his career and how thankful he was to still get to see the fans and be a part of professional wrestling. Logan Chase III interrupted and said he and Simmons had a lot in common because he was a FUTURE Hall of Famer. Simmons wasn't liking Chase interrupting him and Chase told him he was actually tired of legends like Simmons trying to squeeze out those last moments in the spotlight.

Simmons eventually snatched the microphone and said everyone had heard enough and there was only one word that came to his mind when he looked at someone as delusional as Chase....

Chase flew across the ring and out of it.

DSCW announcer Brittany asked Simmons if he'd be willing to stay in the ring during intermission and take pictures with fans and he obliged. I'd just like to say that his interactions with fans were so pleasant and came off so genuine. He smiled the whole time, hugged on the women and children and bro'd it up with the guys as a good time was had by all.

4) Jeremiah Plunkett vs Torque ended in a 15 minute draw

The much bigger Plunkett has been working hard to get back into fighting shape and he's well on his way. He looked great here against the fierce former Southern States Champion. Torque used his speed and agility against Plunkett's size and strength but ultimately neither man was able to get the 3 count in the allotted time. The fans chanted 5 more minutes but that consideration will be revisited at another time, hopefully.

5) Crazy Steve d. Ray Ray by submission in 13.48

Steve is not a huge guy but he had the size advantage in this bout over the "Ultimate Underdog". They each attempted submissions throughout the match. Ray Ray hit back to back 619's but Steve was able to apply a submission to the shoulder of Ray Ray, forcing him to submit in a hard fought match.

6) Jason Collins w/ Logan Chase III d. Jessica Leigh by referee stoppage in 8:55 to become the new Cruiserweight Champion.

Leigh hung with Collins 1 on 1 but Chase got involved and shifted the momentum. Leigh grabbed Chase and Collins ruthlessly attacked her from behind. Collins threw strikes until the referee called for the bell, as Leigh was unable to defend herself. Collins and Chase celebrated in the ring to end the evening.

SCENIC CITY INVITATIONAL/EMPIRE WRESTLING

https://www.facebook.com/EmpireWrestling/?fref=ts

The famous line in Field of Dreams is "If you build it, they will come." Wayne's World 2 is the comical depiction of 2 dreamers setting up their dream concert and worrying that no one would show up but then having Aerosmith and other bands come through to help them create magic.

In 2015, after years of "fantasy booking", myself and Josh Massey made calls, cashed in favors, and formed partnerships to create a 2 night professional wrestling tournament we called the Scenic City Invitational. Drew Mullinax & Susan Bailey-Mullinax & their crew with Empire Wrestling( Lucas Ryan Caylor Daniel Wilson etc) got on board and helped make that first year happen. Wil Force created some great looking graphics for us. Allan Barrie & Matt Griffin filmed/edited the action, making it available for the world to see and some fans that we now know as The Hales Clan ( Dylan Hales Michael Hales Devon Motivator Hales Stephen Dustin Hales ) began to hype the talent and the passion to the rest of the world as we featured many rising stars from wrestling that all went to the ring and gave it all they had.

2016 came and we were presented with the opportunity to take the tournament in a new direction. Kody Wynne came on board to create some amazing graphics. We added Allan Barrie and Daniel Wilson to the creative team, created partnerships with Brad Stutts & Emil Jay and strengthened our relationship with Dylan & Papa Hales. Our goal was to create something bigger than ourselves, bigger than local pro wrestling, and bigger than "just" wrestling and with a partnership with East Hamilton Middle High School, we were able to do just that. It was a huge upgrade in venue and the location was more convenient for out of towners to make a weekend trip out of it. Papa Hales pulled strings with City Cafe and the hotel there to accommodate the fans and the wrestlers, creating some special opportunities for networking and podcasts. We raised thousands of dollars for the school and presented two nights of exciting wrestling action, once again featuring top independent wrestlers but now being an event that people from all over the United States and Canada had travelled to.

It's now year 3. We've expanded to add the Scenic City Rumble that we had in March; we have the Scenic City Trios coming up in November; and we are 10 weeks away from our 3rd tournament. Tickets went on sale today and we're blown away by the response: people coming from more countries, more states, wanting to donate money, be sponsors, and make every effort to come and support what we are doing. This year's effort has included Dylan & Papa Hales more and we're always expanding our team, including a great partnership with Georgia Premier Wrestling ( Bob Riley & M Mark Riley)

A huge thank you to everyone that partners with us to make these events so special. Thank you to the wrestlers for giving their time, efforts, and bodies. Thank you to everyone behind the scenes that has helped us out. Finally, thank you to the hundreds of fans that help us make these events so special!
