JON JONES ACCUSED OF LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT THIS PAST FEBRUARY (UPDATED 6/24/25 WITH BODYCAM FOOTAGE)

Former two division UFC champion Jon Jones’ professional MMA career may be over, but his legal issues are far from over.

That’s because a report from the Albuquerque Journal states that police have issued a summons for Jones, charging him with leaving the scene of an accident this past February. The report states that Jones has been called to appear for a bond arraignment on July 24.

The report states that an Albuquerque police officer was investigating a car crash near the area of San Mateo and Lomas when the officer found a woman in the passenger seat of one of the vehicles involved in the crash. The police officer noticed that the woman “exhibiting signs of significant intoxication and lacking clothing from the waist down.”

Upon making contact with the woman, she stated that Jones was the driver of the vehicle, but fled on foot after the crash happened. The officer spoke to Jones on the phone and it was reported that Jones “appeared to be heavily intoxicated and made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties.”

That situation led to the police officer requesting backup because the officer felt that “allusions to violence” were being made. It should be noted that the person who was on the other end of the phone with the officer never identified himself as Jones.

Jones would speak with police officers a few days later, he stated that the woman had left his house earlier in the day and was intoxicated when she had left. Jones also stated that the woman had called Jones after the accident and the officer that Jones spoke with “immediately opened the conversations with unprofessional language, which led him to doubt the legitimacy of the individual’s claim.”

The woman involved in the crash did admit to drinking alcohol and consuming mushrooms at Jones’ residence and she also reiterated that Jones was the driver of the car. Police have also stated that Jones called the woman’s phone at least 13 times after the crash happened, but any texts between the two couldn’t be captured in the call detail records.

There has been no statement from Jones or a representative at this time.

Update (6/23/25)

Jones' lawyer issued the following statement to SportsNet on the fighter's latest legal drama:

"As Jon's lawyer, I am stunned by the Albuquerque Police Department's decision to charge him in this new case. In the thousands of cases I have handled in my career, I have never seen a case as strange and unwarranted as this one.

"Jon was not driving that night; he wasn't in the car. It appears that an intoxicated woman used a false allegation against Jon to avoid being arrested for DWI, and the police fell for it. Based on the criminal complaint, it looks like they went so far as to seek a warrant for Jon's cell phone records while conducting a misdemeanor traffic investigation.

"I have never heard of such a thing. It is truly unbelievable that the police would waste this amount of resources on such a case. The only thing I can think of is that the police were targeting Jon for improper purposes. We will get to the bottom of it and make sure that this baseless case is dismissed."
