The fighters who competed during this past weekends UFC 324 card weren’t the only ones to leave the Octagon with bumps and bruises, as referee Mark Smith had to be carried backstage after suffering a knee injury during the event.
UFC CEO Dana White says Smith blew out his ACL while officiating the Octagon action.
“Nobody’s asked me about the ref blowing his ACL during the fight,” White said during the UFC 324 post-fight press conference (transcript via Damon Martin of MMA Fighting). “[It was his] ACL. [Bruce] Buffer’s the only one I’ve seen blow an ACL that wasn’t fighting.”
Smith’s final fight of the night as an official came during the Ateba Gautier versus Andrey Pulyaev fight, which was a part of the preliminary card. It is unknown yet as to exactly when Smith suffered the injury.
