Two current UFC champions could be changing weight classes soon, with those champions being middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev and light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira.
UFC CEO Dana White says the promotion is willing to work with Pereira because he has done so much for the promotion.
“He’s one of those guys that always steps up, does whatever we need him to do,” White said at the UFC Houston post-fight press conference (transcript via Damon Martin of MMA Fighting). “Whatever that guy wants to do, we would work with him.”
Pereira has already competed at light heavyweight and middleweight in the UFC, so a move to heavyweight will be his third weight class in the UFC.
White feels differently about Chimaev, as he would like to see him defend the middleweight title first.
“I’d like to see him defend his title at a weight first,” White said. “I’d like to see him defend his title before he talks about jumping around. You’re going to keep going up in weight divisions without defending? I’d rather see him defend [his title].”
