IN THE ZONE LOOKS AT TNA GETTING A 'LEG UP' ON WWE

By Dan Hoff on 11/1/2006 10:36 AM
Recently in an interview conducted with CNBC’s Jim Cramer one Vince McMahon was asked what he could do to get the world to realize that his product reaches the vital 18-34 male demographic. To which Vince’s reply, and I'm sure this was much to the delight of the WWE diehard fan, was he had no idea. He also stated their movie division has a “leg up” because of the TV promotion that they can do and he also stated the WWE knows how to tell stories.

Here I always thought that a “leg up” was supposed to be a good thing. Looking at the two movies that WWE has released lately, those being Kane’s movie and most recently “THE MARINE” featuring John Cena, their box office receipts had more holes in them then Swiss cheese and sank faster then an anchor tossed into the ocean.

A “Leg up”... really Vince? You want to venture into movie land, at least fill your movies with actors people want to pay to see and not guys who the people are voicing their displeasure for on your own programming.

As far as WWE knowing how to tell stories, they should, they've been telling the same ones over and over again for the last 50 years. Did you know that DX was created in 1997 and here we are in the year 2006, nine years later, and Vince is still running the same gang down the same ragged road?

Looking ahead to the company's upcoming pay per view Cyber Sunday and examining the card we quickly notice that for the world tag team titles we have the Spirit Squad, a gang of male cheerleaders with less talent then Ric Flair has in his little toe, putting the titles on the line against Flair and one of the following senior athletes: “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Sgt. Slaughter and I use the term senior here as in older athlete, not Senior Citizen, however Flair and Dusty Rhodes have to be close to legal Senior Citizen status.

In a day and age when the company competing against you for the fan's dollars and interest and offer athletes such as Kurt Angle, Sting, AJ Styles, Christian Cage, LAX, Samoa Joe and others do you really want to offer a match featuring the senior members of the wrestling world?

For that matter as a fan do you really want to see it? Don't get me wrong, the WWE’s senior circuit used to be fun to watch in their prime but now when you watch a match on the show that they compete in you hope and pray they make it through it without losing their false teeth or busting an artificial hip.

This last Sunday TNA showed just why they are the A-team in town by presenting their annual “Bound For Glory” event which is drawing nothing but rave reviews from those who have seen it. The upcoming Genesis event looks to be just as solid as it will feature a match between Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe. With Jeff Jarrett now dethroned and Sting wearing the NWA World Title, TNA’s future looks very bright while WWE looks to be offering us another trip to the Nursing Home.

The one sticking point TNA had with a lot of wrestling fans is that Jarrett held the World title and thus it brought interest in the promotion down and the ratings with it. With Jarrett out of the title picture and the more popular Sting wearing the main title and LAX a much hungrier and devastating force then the aged DX wearing the Tag Team Gold as opposed to five male cheerleaders and Chris Sabin positioned to take the X Division championship to new heights, fan interest is returning to TNA.

McMahon says he knows how to tell stories but how out of date are those stories when you have talent that can't pass his companies own health policy?

For those of you that have watched the Kurt Angle saga unfold I think it’s evident that TNA is beating McMahon to the punch in that arena as well. Then again, as McMahon admitted he had no idea and apparently he still has no idea.

The man who changed an industry is out of ideas and a fiercer competitor then he has faced in the past with his company's battles with WCW and AWA has emerged from the jungle ready to pounce and take its place atop the mountain.

Stay tuned this is going to good as the hungry young lion known as TNA emerges.
