REACTION ON 'THE CRYSTAL BALL' LOOKING AT BIG SHOW

By Geoffrey Pierce on 11/1/2006 11:19 AM

Well it has been less then 48 hours since I sat down and wrote my column – “The Crystal Ball”, and just over 24 hours since it was posted on the Xtra site.  In it we reviewed what’s to come from The Big Show in the coming months.  It was just this mans opinion, and it was based on assumptions and speculation as to what WWE creative MIGHT do with The Big Show.  I have submitted a handful of my writings to PWInsider.com and received an occasional email agreeing or disagreeing with me on my point of view.

However this time, I must have struck a nerve with some.  As I said the article was written less then 48 hours ago and went on the site Yesterday at 10:21am (It's under Latest headlines on the Xtra site).  Since then I have received 36 emails about it (that’s 3 more emails then there were people in line when I went to Eric Bischoff’s book signing in Scottsdale !).  A good portion of the emails are “One Liners” agreeing or disagreeing with my thoughts.  Then there is a handful of emails that actually critic my opinion line by line.  Well I say good!  I welcome it.  Thank you for taking the time to email me and I’m glad I contributed something that not only got read, but generated a response.  I would like to take just a moment and clarify two points.  A recurring theme in the majority of the emails I have received thus far is that I am being “too negative” towards Paul Wight about the direction of The Big Show character.  I would like to make two points concerning what and who I was being negative about;

1. First, WWE Creative… obviously Paul is the person, and my article didn’t address him personally.  I didn’t even comment on “The Giant”, his WCW persona.  I was talking about “The Big Show” who is a character, a creation of WWE and any criticism I doled out about “The Big Show” would be a direct reflection on their story lines and booking decisions.  I have no negative feelings toward Paul Wight the man who is doing the best he can with what he has been given.

2. Second, Paul Wight… Yes I realize I just said I wasn’t critical of him for the direction or use of “The Big Show” and that is still a true statement.  I also admit in my article I called him “The Big Slow”, I am critical of is his Health.  Paul Wight was a SUPER HOT COMMODITY in the winter of ’98-’99.  He signed a 10 year deal with WWF (which Dave mentioned in his Elite audio hotline yesterday has been shortened to 8 years and actually runs out around Feb. of ’07), and Paul was in pretty good shape.  Cut to the winter of ’05-’06 just 10 months ago and he was the biggest we have ever seen him.  (I believe he has slimmed a little since his push in ECW, but I could be wrong.)  When signed with WWE, it was reported that his true weight was about 440 – 460.  When John Cena was on “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” (March of 2006, I think) they showed a clip of Cena slamming The Big Show. John Salley asked John Cena how much “Show” actually weighed.  John said that his intro says “500 lbs” but in real life he is about 560 lbs.  That’s 100 – 120 lbs more then just 7 years earlier.  Paul Wight has made a lot of money in the last 7 years, and apparently he has also eaten a Diva.  Because 100 – 120lbs is about what a Diva would weigh.

Thanks for all the great feedback.  If you haven’t read the article yet.  It is called THE CRYSTAL BALL LOOKS AT THE FUTURE FOR THE BIG SHOW and it can be found on the Xtra site under Latest Headlines.  Also yesterday Dave posted an Elite Audio Hotline where he goes over even more “Big Show” items.  If you haven’t heard it you can find it on the Elite Links on the regular site.  It’s a good listen!
