Creative: Why The WWE Fails To Understand What It Means?
By: David Tees
I have been a wrestling fan for over twenty years now, I have seen everything ranging from great to downright awful in the wrestling ring. However, when it comes to the WWE, it seems like the word “creative†doesn’t really seem to fit in with the plans. When you look at what’s being done with Shelton Benjamin, ECW, MVP, Eric Bischoff, the WWE Women’s Title Tournament and many more things….you can’t seem to not shake your head at the TV.
This man is a multi-time WWE Tag Team Champion, multi-time WWE Intercontinental Champion and the only man to wrestle in both Money In The Bank Ladder Matches at Wrestlemania. This man now regularly headlines WWE Heat and is put in a crappy storyline based on his race, this man is Shelton Benjamin. Shelton Benjamin is one of the most athletically skilled wrestlers currently on the WWE roster, but all the WWE can do with him is come up with a storyline based on “race.†It has been done before in the WWE with Theodore Long, Rodney Mack, D-Lo Brown, Mohammed Hassan, Daivari and others. This is a prime example of how the WWE has the talent right in front of their eyes, but they cannot see anything to do with him.
Extreme Championship Wrestling, the little wrestling federation that nobody believed would hit it big, actually hit it big. Then they sadly go out of business and the company is bought by Vince McMahon, who does the spirit of ECW wrong twice and it was five years apart. The first blunder happened during the failed “Invasion†angle (which I could cover as a another example of a WWE Creative mishap, but who really wants to remember it), where ECW was brought in to save the already failing feud between the WWE and the WWE owned WCW. The face of the original ECW, Paul Heyman, was paired with the owner of ECW during the “Invasion†angle, Stephanie McMahon. Just like the WCW stars in the angle, the ECW
stars were destroyed and beaten by the superior WWE athletes.
Fast forward five years later to 2006, Vince McMahon decides to revive ECW as a third brand to go along with Raw and Smackdown. Vince McMahon brings Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, Rob Van Dam, The Sandman, Balls Mahoney, The FBI, Francine and other original ECW stars to…get this…job to the homegrown WWE stars and called up developmental talent. During a trip to an ECW House Show this past Summer, I heard a radio advertisement for the same house show that proclaimed Rob Van Dam, Sabu, The Sandman and others as “ECW stars.†How in the world can they be ECW stars if they continuously job out to the WWE guys like Big Show, Hardcore Holly, Matt Striker, Mike Knox and others. How can you build a “reborn†ECW if the original ECW stars are used as nothing but jobbers for the so called new ECW stars?
MVP had a great build up heading into his debut at WWE No Mercy, WWE Creative had him built up as the biggest free agent in wrestling. Even the WWE website held a press conference announcing that MVP had signed with Smackdown and would debut at WWE No Mercy. Then the proverbial crap hit the fan at WWE No Mercy when MVP made his much heralded debut against a jobber. That’s right remaining WWE fans, the much heralded MVP debut match was against a jobber, we paid $40 to see a squash match. To make this worse, they built MVP up like Terrell Owens and they have him do nothing TO-like after the match. Think about it, after MVP knocked out and defeated his opponent, he could’ve pulled out a “sharpie†and autographed his opponent before tossing him into the crowd, the way TO did when he autographed the football and gave it to his agent.
When Eric Bischoff was ousted as the general manager of Raw, Vince McMahon proceeded to toss Eric Bischoff into the back of a garbage truck. Eric Bischoff returns to Raw many months later to promote his book and be part of WWE Cyber Sunday, what happens when he runs into Vince McMahon? Logic tells you he would still be pissed off about the whole garbage truck incident, but this is WWE Creative we are talking about. However, logic left the room a long time ago in the WWE and Eric Bischoff greets Vince McMahon and even does his bidding by costing Triple H a match against Randy Orton. Makes sense…doesn’t it?
At WWE Unforgiven 2006, Trish Stratus defeats Lita to win the WWE Women’s Championship in her final WWE appearance before retirement. The WWE Women’s Title is then put up in a tournament consisting of Lita, Mickie James, Victoria, Torrie Wilson, Melina, Maria and Candice Michelle. Right when the bell rang on the first match, it all went to hell in a handbag and it only took less than a minute to do so. In the first match, Lita defeated Candice Michelle in under a minute as Edge (serving as special guest ref) speared Candice Michelle so Lta can easily pin her. This continued in the second match when Mickie James took on Victoria, in a Lingerie Match. How can the average wrestling fan take women’s wrestling seriously when two of the best women wrestlers in the WWE compete in a match where looks outdo the talent? The third match in this spectacle of stupidity featured Melina and Torrie Wilson in a Lumberjack Match, which was a good idea. Only one problem emerged, all the lumberjacks (besides Candice Michelle & Maria) weren’t even part of the tournament, much less in the correct brand. The final match of the opening round pitted Maria, Torrie Wilson, Victoria and Candice Michelle in a Last Chance Bra & Panties Match. How in the world did Maria get into a “last chance†match when she never had the “first chance†to begin with?
And the WWE wonders why more people are tuning into TNA, UFC, Ring Of Honor and other alternatives…at least they haven’t stuck The Great Khali in ECW….Oh! That’s right, they just did that this past Tuesday Night on ECW, WWE Creative Strikes Again!!!
